Kentucky has enough pollution in its waters, coal companies cannot be allowed to pollute the ground waters and wells further with its run-off.
Beverly May, a member of Kentuckians for the Commonwealth, told the joint Administrative Regulation and Review Subcommittee on Monday that the regulations would assure that no coal companies will be held responsible for their selenium pollution.
Why is this important?
The Kentucky legislature is going to vote on weakening water quality standards for toxic selenium. The pollutant, while essential to life in tiny quantities, can cause grotesque birth defects in fish and aquatic life.
The new standard for short-term exposure would be more than 10 times higher than the previous limit.
