Whatcom's Gateway-Pacific Terminal--Not Just About Coal
I am concerned about the health and safety impacts of the proposed Gateway Pacific Terminal at Cherry Point, including the well-documented problems with coal, but also the potential for increased rail transport of hazardous chemicals through populated areas of Whatcom County and neighborhoods in Bellingham. It has been documented that coal dust accumulating on rail -beds has caused train derailments. Since toxic chemicals are currently being shipped through Bellingham to the refineries north of the city, I am concerned about the safety of the tracks should increased coal shipments occur. I respectfully request that Bellingham Mayor Linville, WA. DOT Sec. Hammond and Gov. Gregoire pursue further information and assurances from Gateway officials as to the products to be shipped as bulk and break-bulk commodities to China and other Pacific Rim nations and what assurances they and rail company BNSF, can provide the public as to how they will prevent and/or respond to toxic materials accidents.
Why is this important?
The Gateway Terminal project isn't just about coal--it involves a second pier for bulk and break-bulk shipping, which could mean increased rail traffic of hazardous materials through Whatcom communities. China currently imports more chemicals than it produces. Citizens of Whatcom County deserve to know more about the long-term plans for this facility.
