The first paragraph of the Declaration of Independence, signed and dated July 4, 1776, reads: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."
Let's make sure the 11 million undocumented immigrants in this country can finally attest to the truth of this statement, by coming out of the shadows ensured of the same unalienable rights--without expiration date--and the same duties of any lawful resident, citizen or not.
Let's make sure immigration reform doesn't fall short of the promise of equal rights to all residents of this country, and it doesn't create another underclass--this time on the books, under the pretext of "migration labor" or "temporary workers."
Why is this important?
American society has grown complacent with relegating to pariah status a shadow work force and population that today numbers 11 million people. This is unacceptable. This is immoral. This goes against the principles set forth in the Declaration of Independence.
