IMPLEMENTATION OF BEARDS (FOR ALL) IN THE US ARMED FORCES

Beards have been a controversial topic since the military implemented it. For thousands of year since the forming of armies, beards have played a crucial role in the appearance of feared and respected leaders. War heroes like “General Ulysses S. Grant,” led the union to victory while fighting against the vestiges of slavery. All while having a trimmed and professional beard. In today’s military, those with (medical conditions) or exemptions that allow for the growing of beards are commonly discriminated against.

Those like Master Sergeant Parker, who’s an active duty senior non-commissioned officer in the United States Army. Master Sergeant Parker has had many eyes on him ever since he assumed position of First Sergeant. After rightfully earning his new position & title, Master Sergeant Parker then went on to social media to display emotions determination, and perseverance through it all. Master Sergeant Parker was then mistaken for “taunting.” He then lost his newly earned position as First Sergeant, and on the plan of action, he was then told to stop making videos about beards and to “retake his command photo.” This is one of many stories that plaque our army and lowers morale in soldiers that can’t afford to shave their beards.

Our other allies like Germany, the United Kingdom, and many more nato allies allow for beards in military service and there’s NO indication that beards hinder the mission and military performance. Furthermore the allowance of beards (in moderation)  would boost morale, lower discrimination against those that can’t shave their beards, and will show that the military allows unity and no one to be left behind. As the army motto states. “Be all you can be.”

Why is this important?

Microaggressions towards African American males with beards in today's military can indeed occur, reflecting broader societal biases and stereotypes. These microaggressions can manifest in various ways, such as through comments or actions that subtly demean or question the professionalism and capability of these individuals based on their appearance.

Some key points to consider:

1. **Grooming Standards**: The U.S. military has strict grooming standards, and while exceptions can be made for religious reasons, they are not always easily granted. African American males with beards may face more scrutiny and have to justify their appearance more frequently than their peers.

2. **Stereotypes and Biases**: There is a pervasive stereotype associating beards with unprofessionalism or non-conformity. African American males might experience additional layers of bias due to racial stereotypes, which can lead to assumptions about their character or abilities.

3. **Professional Advancement**: These biases can potentially hinder career advancement. If an individual is perceived as less professional due to their appearance, they might be overlooked for promotions or leadership roles.

4. **Cultural Sensitivity and Awareness**: While the military has made strides in promoting diversity and inclusion, there can still be gaps in understanding and sensitivity towards cultural expressions, such as wearing a beard. This can lead to microaggressions, even if unintentional.

5. **Support Systems**: The presence of supportive leadership and diversity programs can mitigate the impact of these microaggressions. Initiatives aimed at increasing cultural competency and addressing unconscious biases are crucial in fostering an inclusive environment.

Addressing these microaggressions requires ongoing education, awareness, and a commitment to diversity and inclusion within the military. Recognizing and challenging these subtle forms of discrimination can help create a more equitable environment for all service members.

How it will be delivered

I as well as others will send this petition to our fellow congressmen, and in doing so, ONLY together, will we enact change!
