Congress: Introduce a Make Polluters Pay Agenda
UPDATE: We did it! Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) and U.S. Representatives Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.) and Judy Chu (D-Calif.) introduced the Polluters Pay Climate Fund Act, which requires the biggest polluters to begin paying their fair share to confront the climate crisis.
Peak hurricane season is here, and climate change, driven by fossil fuel pollution, is making these storms stronger, deadlier, and more frequent than ever before. Hurricanes, wildfires, and extreme weather events are devastating our communities and economy, and it’s working Americans who are left to cover the damages, not the billionaire polluters responsible for the destruction.
It’s time for Congress to act. The fossil fuel industry has been lying to the public for years about the damage their emissions cause, all while driving us toward climate catastrophe. Instead of paying what they owe for the damage, Big Oil is making record profits and sticking the rest of us with the bill. We need Congress to take action by introducing a Make Polluters Pay Act, holding fossil fuel companies accountable for the damages their emissions have caused.

Why is this important?
Meteorologists are warning that we’re on track for another record-breaking season—just like 2020—when multiple hurricanes and tropical storms formed on the same day. Decades of climate research is clear: Big Oil’s emissions are raising sea surface temperatures, making storms more destructive than ever.
Hurricane Beryl shattered records as the earliest Category 5 hurricane in the Atlantic. It knocked out power for millions of people in Texas, during a deadly heatwave that claimed dozens of lives. The costs are staggering—up to $32 billion in damage—yet the fossil fuel industry continues to dodge responsibility for their role in creating these climate-fueled disasters. They profit, we pay.
Some states have already taken bold action. In May, Vermont passed the Climate Superfund Act, becoming the first state in history to force Big Oil to pay for the damage their emissions have caused. And they aren’t alone. New York has passed its own Climate Superfund Act, and more states are following their lead. Now, it’s time for Congress to step up and pass federal legislation that will force these billionaire polluters to pay for the climate disasters they’ve fueled.

American taxpayers are crushed by the costs of rebuilding homes, communities, and lives, all while Big Oil pollutes our planet and rakes in record profits. It’s time they’re held accountable. Sign the petition to demand Congress pass the Make Polluters Pay Act and force Big Oil to take responsibility for the destruction they’ve caused!
