Defend and Strengthen Our Democracy

Voting Rights Petition to Senator Alex Padilla
Dear Senator Padilla,

We, the undersigned constituents of California, write to you with deep concern about the erosion of voting rights and the urgent need to protect and expand access to the ballot for all Americans.

Across the country, communities are facing discriminatory barriers to voting, partisan gerrymandering, and deliberate efforts to silence voices—especially those of Black, Latino, Native, Asian American, and young voters. We believe our democracy works best when it includes all of us. Therefore, we urge you to take every possible action to advance the following legislation:

  • The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, which restores and strengthens the protections of the Voting Rights Act to guard against racial discrimination in voting.

  • The Freedom To Vote Act, which sets national standards for voting access, curbs partisan gerrymandering, and increases transparency in campaign finance.

  • The Native American Voting Rights Act, which addresses systemic obstacles that have long suppressed Native voters.

  • The Washington, D.C. Admission Act, which grants full representation and self-determination to over 700,000 taxpaying Americans.

While we recognize that these bills may not receive floor consideration in the current Congress, we ask you to:

  1. Continue to co-sponsor and publicly champion each of these measures so your colleagues and the public hear consistent support.

  2. Speak out forcefully in the media and in committee hearings to keep voting rights and representation at the forefront of the national conversation.

  3. Work with fellow Senators to prepare these bills for reintroduction and passage when the opportunity arises.

  4. Urge Senate leadership to prioritize these bills whenever possible and to explore all procedural avenues to bring them forward.

Democracy cannot defend itself. It requires principled leadership and persistent advocacy, especially in moments when progress seems stalled. We are counting on you to remain, as you have been, a steadfast voice for fair representation, equal access, and the fundamental rights of every voter.

Thank you for your service and your commitment to a more inclusive democracy.

Why is this important?

Because your voice matters, and so does every vote. This petition calls on Senator Padilla to keep fighting for critical legislation that protects our most fundamental right in a democracy: the right to vote. Across the country, politicians are making it harder for people — especially Black, Latino, Native, Asian American, and young voters — to cast a ballot. Extreme gerrymandering, voter roll purges, and needless barriers threaten to silence millions.

Even when Congress is gridlocked, persistent public pressure makes a difference. Signing this petition helps show that Californians expect their elected officials to champion democracy consistently and boldly, not just when it’s politically convenient.

Add your name to demand action and leadership. Democracy requires all of us.
