To: Governor Pritzker and the Illinois General Assembly

Do you love your small hometown? It is in danger in Illinois.

HB2515 and SB2217 both propose to dissolve small Illinois towns. HB2515 mandates dissolution of townships with fewer than 500 residents. SB2217 is even more egregious, mandating that all townships with fewer than 5000 residents be dissolved. These bills need to be stopped!

No politician has the right to decide whether small towns have the right to exist, or to mandate their dissolution. The sponsors of these bills represent large, wealthy communities. Neither is qualified to make a decision that will affect every small township in Illinois.

We request that all representatives vote against these bills and work to prevent any such bill from being proposed in the future.

Why is this important?

Small towns are the heart and soul of rural areas in Illinois. Many have deep roots that extend back to the very foundation of our state. Residents of these communities work together to support one another and to make our state a better place. They add to the financial stability of our state by welcoming visitors who come to enjoy the natural beauty in these rural areas.

Furthermore, these small towns have distinct, rich histories that are worth preserving - and those would be wiped out by mandating that the communities be dissolved. Our rural areas, and our state as a whole would be much poorer if either of these bills is enacted. Not only do these two bills need to be defeated, a bill that mandates that no future attempts be made to destroy these communities should be proposed and passed. The lifestyle and hometown of EVERY Illinoisan is important and worthy of respect.
