Sign this petition to advocate for the release of Hyatt Ziva Cancun's captive dolphins!
In the serene backdrop of Cancun's Hyatt Ziva, amidst the joy and celebration of weddings and vacations, lies a hidden sorrow - the captivity of six dolphins. These majestic creatures, intelligent and social beings of the sea, are confined to a small pool solely for the entertainment of guests. While everything about the Hyatt Ziva exudes luxury and hospitality, the presence of captive dolphins casts a shadow over its reputation.
As a guest who recently attended a beautiful wedding at the Hyatt Ziva, I was deeply troubled by the sight of these dolphins confined to such a limited space. It's evident that their natural behaviors and instincts are stifled, and their well-being compromised, all in the name of human entertainment.
Dolphins, like all sentient beings, deserve to live freely in their natural habitats, to swim vast distances, to form social bonds, and to experience life on their own terms. Keeping them in captivity for our amusement is not only ethically questionable but also goes against the principles of compassion and respect for all life.
There has been a growing global movement towards ending practices of confining animals for entertainment purposes. In Mexico City, the Dolphin Project successfully campaigned for the end of commercial exploitation of dolphins. The Legislative Assembly of the Federal District (ALDF) prohibited the use of dolphins in public displays, therapy, scientific investigation, training, and entertainment; the ban was adopted unanimously and dolphins were recognized as sentient beings who suffer in concrete tanks.
As Ric O’Barry, Founder and Director of Dolphin Project said, “[T]he best way to bring about change for the common good is by example. Kudos to our friends and colleagues in Mexico, as well as deputy López Adame and the coordinators of parties in the local Mexico City Congress for enacting this positive step for dolphins. We encourage the rest of the country to follow in Mexico City’s footsteps and ban all captive dolphin displays.”
We urge the management of Hyatt Ziva to recognize the ethical implications of keeping dolphins in captivity and to take immediate action to release them into a suitable sanctuary where they can live out their lives in a more natural environment. Evidence has shown that they can return to their natural habitats and thrive. Let us be a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves and work towards ending dolphin captivity in Cancun.
As the first woman to govern the state, Governor Lezama Espinosa holds the power to enact monumental change, not only in policy but also in the hearts and minds of her constituents.
Governor Lezama Espinosa's historic position symbolizes a new era of leadership, one that champions equality, empathy, and environmental stewardship. As the guardian of Quintana Roo's future, she possesses the unique opportunity to leave a lasting legacy of compassion by championing the rights of these dolphins.
We implore Governor Lezama Espinosa to heed the call of conscience and use her influence to advocate for the release of these dolphins from their confinement at Hyatt Ziva. Let us seize this moment to stand on the right side of history, to honor the intrinsic worth of all living beings, and to pave the way for a more humane and harmonious future in Quintana Roo and beyond.
