Help Stop Idaho's Wolf Slaughter

Horrific new legislation passed in Idaho removes nearly all limits on wolf hunting and authorizes hunters and private contractors to exterminate 90% of the state's wolf population. We're fighting back – and there's something you can do to help.

Under a federal law known as the Pittman Robertson Act, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service gives Idaho and other states millions of dollars each year to fund state wildlife-management projects. Such conservation funds can only be entrusted to states that have demonstrated their commitment to actual wildlife conservation.

Please ask the Fish and Wildlife Service to immediately notify the state of Idaho that passage and implementation of the state's new wolf-extermination law disqualifies it from future allocation of federal funds. Idaho should only receive these funds if it repeals this horrific law.

Why is this important?

Unless the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service intervenes, decades of progress recovering wolves in the region will be lost. The state's wolf population will be reduced to the threshold triggering protection under the Endangered Species Act.

Last year Idaho received more than $18 million in federal funding for wildlife-management projects. The promise of these funds incentivizes states to enact sound conservation policies that benefit all wildlife. And a state becomes ineligible for these funds if it passes legislation contrary to the conservation purposes of the Pittman Robertson Act and other federal laws.

Please ask the agency to disqualify Idaho from receiving federal funding for wildlife management unless the state immediately repeals its wolf-extermination legislation.

Wolves are being massacred in Idaho, Montana and Wyoming.

In the most recent hunting and trapping season alone, these three states have slaughtered approximately 500 wolves by brutal means like strangulation snares. Twenty-five of them were killed simply for stepping outside the borders of Yellowstone National Park, where they're safe.

But there's hope: The Biden administration can save the wolves who remain.

Last year the Center for Biological Diversity filed an emergency petition to protect northern Rocky Mountains wolves under the Endangered Species Act, but the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service missed its deadline to respond. So now we're in court to save these intelligent, social animals, who are crucial to helping their ecosystems thrive.

Take action: Tell the Service to immediately protect to wolves in Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. LINK: https://act.biologicaldiversity.org/hDoJ_hDSVUy4X5U6HUC7Ew2

Just last week the Center for Biological Diversity and allies won a landmark court decision restoring Endangered Species Act protection to most gray wolves in the United States, shielding them once again from hunting sanctioned by the states. But the ruling doesn’t help the wolves of the northern Rockies, who are still being “managed” — that is, massacred — in Idaho, Montana and Wyoming.

This hunting and trapping season alone, those three states have already slaughtered more than 500 wolves — at least 24 right outside Yellowstone National Park — by some of the most brutal means ever, including painful strangulation snares.

Join the outcry: Tell the administration not to leave these wolves out in the cold. They need the lifesaving protection of the Endangered Species Act before it’s too late.

Did you know that there’s an important global treaty to conserve biological diversity, and the United States is the only major country that’s not a member?

In the midst of the extinction crisis, that’s unacceptable.

It’s high time for the United States to join the Convention on Biological Diversity.

Next year the convention meets to set the global conservation agenda for the coming decade. With more than a million species on track to go extinct, this meeting is critical to saving life on Earth.

Click the link below to tell President Biden and your senators to ratify the Convention on Biological Diversity and commit to ending extinction now.

Idaho and Montana have declared war on gray wolves, passing bills that could exterminate most of the states' gray wolf populations.

We're fighting to protect these apex predators. Take action and sign the petition right now to protect wolves.

Over decades the federal government invested heavily to restore these apex predators to their former range. All those gains are now at risk of being completely wiped out.

With your help, we can prevent the loss of thousands of wolves' lives and decades of progress toward wolf recovery in the northern Rockies.

Tell Biden’s Interior Department that you stand with the wolves.
