Hold Elena Brenner elected school board member accountable for Islamophobic Social Media Post

Subject: Collective Letter of Concern Regarding Islamophobic Comments by Elena Board Member
Dear Superintendent Burrows and Members of the Appoquinimink Board of Education,
We, the undersigned members of the Muslim community of Appoquinimink School District, are writing to express our deep concern and disappointment regarding the Islamophobic comments posted on social media by elected Board Member Brenner.
As families whose children attend Appoquinimink schools, we believe every student deserves to feel safe, respected, and valued regardless of their religious beliefs. When an elected official makes comments perceived as discriminatory toward a religious community, it raises serious concerns about representation, inclusion, and the trust families place in district leadership.
Muslim families are an integral part of the Appoquinimink community. Our children attend schools throughout the district, participate in student leadership, and contribute meaningfully to their school communities. Members of our Muslim Student Associations (MSAs) have dedicated countless hours to community service, demonstrating their commitment to making a positive difference. Our families deserve the same dignity and respect afforded to every other member of this community.
We recognize that elected board members have responsibilities distinct from those of the superintendent. Nevertheless, we believe public officials have a responsibility to foster an environment of respect and inclusion for everyone they represent.
We respectfully request:
1. A formal apology to Muslim students in the Appoquinimink School District and their families.
1. A formal apology to Muslim students in the Appoquinimink School District and their families.
2.A public reaffirmation of the standards of conduct expected of elected school board members.
3.A district-wide email to all families clarifying the standards of conduct and expectations for elected board members, particularly regarding their statements and behavior in public forums and on social media.
We also ask the district to reaffirm its commitment to protecting the dignity and belonging of students and families of all faiths.
This is not simply about one social media post. It is about the message such comments send to Muslim students who are growing up in this district and deserve to know that they belong here. We expect our children to be treated with dignity, and we expect the leaders who represent them to uphold the values of respect, inclusion, and fairness. Our community deserves to have its concerns heard, taken seriously, and addressed through meaningful action.
We look forward to your written response.
Sincerely,
Concerned Muslim Parents and Community Members
