Keep HBCUs safe

Earlier this month, multiple historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) across the country have received threats against students that forced these schools to lock down the campus, cancel classes, and even fully evacuate campus, depending on the severity of the threat.

These threats are part of a disturbing pattern of racially motivated intimidation that creates an unsafe and hostile environment for students, faculty, and staff. Despite this troubling trend, and the public demand from the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), neither the Department of Justice (DOJ) nor the FBI has launched a federal investigation into these seemingly coordinated attacks. Tell the Justice Department: Investigate the recent threats against HBCUs and Black students nationwide!

Why is this important?

HBCUs have played a critical role in our nation's history.

For over two centuries, HBCUs have opened doors that were closed elsewhere to Black Americans, providing them with a world-class education within the safety of community. Renowned figures like Martin Luther King Jr., Toni Morrison, Thurgood Marshall, Rosa Parks, and former Vice President Kamala Harris are all HBCU alumni, and each has had a profound impact on our country. Their contributions are proof of how essential these institutions are to America’s past, present, and future.

At a time where political violence is on the rise, the Justice Department must launch a full investigation into these threats. Now is the time to make clear that intimidation, hate, and violence have no place in our country.
