Keep Our Kids Safe: Add Speed Bumps on Newark Ave
As concerned parents and local business owners, we are calling on city officials to take immediate action to improve pedestrian safety on Newark Avenue near The Little Gym and up towards Dickinson High School.
This stretch of road is heavily trafficked and dangerously sloped, encouraging drivers to speed up as they go up and down the hill. This presents a clear and urgent danger to the many children and families who live, play, walk, and commute in the area every day.
Despite previous requests for speed bumps and other traffic-calming measures, the city has failed to implement changes. Our calls for action have gone unanswered—and yet the need is more urgent than ever.
On 6th Street and Jersey Avenue, just blocks away, a child was tragically struck and killed by a UPS truck. This devastating event has shaken our community to its core and laid bare how vulnerable pedestrians—especially children—are on Jersey City streets.
We believe it should not take another tragedy to spark action.
As the owners of a children’s facility located on Newark Avenue, we are particularly concerned for the safety of the families we serve. We strive to provide a space where kids can grow, learn, and thrive—but we cannot ignore the risks posed just outside our doors. We are asking not just as business owners, but as parents, for the city to prioritize preventative safety measures.
We are urging the City of Jersey City to:
- Install speed bumps on Newark Avenue between Dickinson High School and The Little Gym.
- Conduct a comprehensive traffic safety review of this corridor.
- Engage the community in a transparent discussion about long-term pedestrian safety improvements.
The city has not done enough to protect our streets. We are coming together now, as a community, to demand that change.
We invite all concerned residents, families, and local organizations to sign this petition and show your support for safer streets—before another life is lost.
Protect our children. Prevent another tragedy. Install speed bumps on Newark Avenue.
Why is this important?
Why is this important?
Every parent should feel confident that their child can walk down the street safely. Every child deserves to grow up in a city where cars don’t come before people.
Newark Avenue near The Little Gym and Dickinson High School has become increasingly dangerous. Cars routinely speed up going up and down the hill, ignoring the fact that this is a high-pedestrian area with families, students, strollers, and children crossing daily. There are no speed bumps, minimal signage, and little enforcement. We’ve already seen the devastating consequences of a lack of action.
The truth is: this could happen to any one of our children. And it’s preventable.
We’ve asked for safety measures before and been ignored. Now, we’re raising our voices together to say: enough is enough. We will not wait until another tragedy occurs to demand change.
Why should you join us?
Because this isn’t just about one business or one family—it’s about all of us. Whether you're a parent, educator, commuter, student, or simply someone who cares about community safety, your voice matters.
By signing this petition, you're saying that protecting lives is more important than shaving seconds off a commute. You’re standing up for safer streets, for proactive leadership, and for the belief that we don’t have to accept dangerous roads as normal.
Let’s come together and make sure our city is a place where families can thrive—not fear.
