Maintain Funding for NASA's GLOBE Program

The President's budget results in significant cutbacks to NASA which were flowed down to NASA's Science Mission Directorate. The GLOBE Program sits in the Science Mission Directorate and has been identified as one of the programs which NASA will cut if funding is reduced as shown in the President's budget. The GLOBE program is celebrating its 30th year of bipartisan support bringing hands on, real world science experience to its participants. GLOBE has engaged teachers, students, scientists and citizen scientists for 30 years - inspiring the next generation of scientists and engineers, who participate in meaningful data collection and analysis of their local and global environment. To date there are over 1.2 million participants associated with GLOBE who have contributed over 270 million unique measurements to GLOBE's open source database with thousands of student and STEM professional papers referencing GLOBE data. Cancelling this program eliminates an amazing history of engaging and developing students, citizen scientists and STEM professionals in science data collection, data analysis, technology and environmental understanding. GLOBE's protocols provide guidance on collecting data relative to Agriculture, Forestry, NASA science, water quality, biosphere and atmosphere as well as proving the ability to record real time data and information for emergency scenarios such as hurricanes, tornadoes and earthquakes. The loss of GLOBE would be the loss of a national treasure with a 30 year track record of positive impact on US children, STEM professionals and interested citizens. We strongly encourage you to support maintaining NASA's budget and fully fund the ongoing success of the GLOBE program.
Why is this important?
The GLOBE Program is a 30 year program providing participants with support to perform real world, hands on science experience through data collection, data analysis and connecting users to NASA and scientists around the world. In the US alone there are over 32,000 trained GLOBE teachers, over 500,000 students, and over 150,000 citizen scientists that have contributed nearly 180 million unique measurements. Over 1,000 US student projects can be found on the GLOBE website with countless stories of the impact GLOBE has had on students and thousands of citizen scientists.
