Make N Ave 51 Safe for All

We, the undersigned residents, workers, and visitors of Highland Park and Eagle Rock, call on the City of Los Angeles to take urgent action to improve safety along North Ave 51 between Stratford Road and Townsend Avenue. This is in addition to the Request for Actions, which the Historic Highland Park Neighborhood Council passed on September 18th, 2025, and the Eagle Rock Neighborhood Council passed on September 17th, 2024.
This corridor has been the site of numerous accidents in recent years, including car crashes into homes, utility poles, and repeated collisions near Coringa Drive, Eaton Street, and Townsend Avenue. These incidents have caused property damage, costly litigation for the City, and ongoing danger for pedestrians, seniors, children, and transit riders who rely on this street. Despite repeated accidents, drivers continue to speed through the area unchecked, creating unacceptable risks for our community.

Our Request
We respectfully urge Councilmember Ysabel Jurado, the Los Angeles Department of Transportation, and the Bureau of Street Services to:
1. A three-way stop on the intersection of N. Ave 51 and Eaton Street.
2. Speed bumps along either the Townsend Avenue or N. Ave 51 before Eaton St.
3. Accompanying pedestrian crosswalks, or equivalent, with the three-way stop sign in Item #1.
4. A speed limit sign (of a maximum speed of 15 mph) coming southbound from the hill on Townsend Avenue onto N. Ave 51.
5. Yellow slowdown signs running southbound on N. Ave 51, between Townsend Avenue and Eaton Street.
6. Metal crash barriers in front of 1910, 1902, and 1900 N Ave 51.
7. LAPD Traffic Enforcement along N Ave 51 and Townsend Avenue.
Why is this important?
Every accident that occurs along this stretch of N. Ave 51 endangers lives, burdens families, and costs the City resources that could be better spent elsewhere. Residents should feel safe walking to school, catching the bus, or simply crossing their own street.
Together, we can ensure that Highland Park and Eagle Rock remain vibrant, walkable, and safe neighborhoods for everyone.
We urge immediate action to protect our community.
