Maryland University Professors deserve collective bargaining!
Dear Governor Moore and Senate President Ferguson,
Maryland’s public colleges and universities have left the professors ( full time and adjuncts) and graduate assistants behind, and you can pass one bill and extend to them the same rights that all K-12 teachers, community college professors, and all other Maryland university staff have.
Why are university professors and all higher ed faculty denied basic rights to choose a union if they want one? We say no kings, but Maryland, a strongly Democratic state, denies the basic right to collective bargaining? This needs to change immediately, and not some anti union piecemeal bill that divides staff. One bill for all faculty and graduate assistants.
We are seeing in real time that unions and their litigation are the main supports for our democracy on the federal level. We need higher ed faculty unions to safeguard academic freedom, and while we hope it never happens, we need unions to protect against anti-democratic forces at the state level
Bills to give these rights have been filed for 25 years, do your job and vote to give higher ed faculty basic Union rights. Make it SB 1 in the Governor’s package and pass it immediately.

Why is this important?
Most every Maryland state employee , even managers, have a right to choose or reject collective bargaining, except higher education faculty and our colleges and universities. Why? Why is it allowable for a kindergarten teacher to have this right but not the university professor who teaches them how to be an elementary school educator? All workers deserve the right to freely choose a union to bargain for better working conditions.
Why is a law school professor who teaches labor law denied the rights she teaches her students about? Democrats in Congress complain about lacking a majority, but what is stopping the super majority of Democrats in Maryland’s legislature from passing this on day one? Why has it not been in the Governor’s legislative package?
We need this now and we need not to be piecemeal.
