Norway should use its Sovereign Wealth Fund to buy Hawaii
Donald Trump declared that he wants to buy Greenland from Denmark. The rationale would be that Greenland is based mid-way between USA and England, or Canada and Russia, or two other places, so its purchase is important for security reasons. Unfortunately, there are two problems:
1) Greenland does not belong to Denmark, so Denmark cannot sell Greenland to USA (somebody please explain it to him again).
2) USA is broke! The US has a gross federal debt (which includes debt held by the public, debt held by federal trust funds and other government accounts) of over $36.3 trillion (that would be $36,329,000,000,000, and counting).
While nothing can be done with the first problem (Denmark simply cannot sell Greenland, in the same way as Germany cannot sell Luxembourg), there is a solution with the second problem that prevents the US from buying Greenland: The US can make some money by selling Hawaii to Norway.
Norway has a Sovereign Wealth Fund of $1.56 trillions, thanks to its wise use of the proceed from the sale of oil, which was invested over the years rather than being wasted in tax cuts for multi-millionaires, billionaires and corporations.
The purchase price for Hawaii is proposed at $200 billion, based on the following:
1) Hawaii has a GDP of $101 million.
2) Hawaii's 2023 debt balance reached a historic high of $95.2 billion.
3) In the fiscal year of 2024, the state debt of Hawaii was about 8.74 billion U.S. dollars.
Given the dire state of Hawaii's finance, Norway should propose to buy Hawaii for an amount similar to Hawaii's GDP, plus its debt balance of $95.2 billion. For approximately $200 billion, Norway would own an island in the North Pacific Ocean.
The advantage to Norway would be to own a tropical island for Norwegians to spend their holidays during the harsh winters. Also, as an island that is located mid-way between two places, it is important for security reasons. All this would be done without even noticing a change in Norwegian's Sovereign Wealth Fund.
The advantage to the US would be the large income that it could earn, which could justify another tax cut to multi-millionaires, billionaires and corporations. The US would still not be able to buy Greenland, but nothing can be done about that.
The advantage to Hawaii would be that it would join a wealthy country with a better health care, better education, and higher life expectancy than the US.
