Petition Regarding Club America at Hebron High School
To the administration of Hebron High School,
The newly introduced Club America organization at Hebron High School has raised significant concerns among students regarding political neutrality, equal representation, and the role of politically affiliated organizations within our school community.
Our concern is not that students should be prohibited from discussing politics or expressing their political beliefs. Students should absolutely have the freedom to engage in political discussion and organize around issues they care about. However, that freedom must be applied equally.
If students are unable to establish or maintain clubs representing one political perspective—such as a Democratic-oriented organization—while a Republican-oriented organization is permitted to operate, then our school is creating an unequal environment for political expression. Regardless of the legal requirements governing student organizations, students should have equal opportunity to form organizations representing differing viewpoints.
Allowing only one side of a political spectrum to have an organized presence within a high school can create an environment in which students are exposed disproportionately to one political perspective. High school students are still developing their understanding of politics and civic engagement, making it especially important that our school does not appear to favor one political ideology over another.
Our position is simple: if Club America is permitted to operate at Hebron High School, students must also be allowed a meaningful and equal opportunity to establish a club representing opposing political viewpoints. If that equal opportunity cannot be provided, we believe the administration should reconsider whether a politically affiliated organization belongs in our school at all.
We ask the administration to either:
- Remove Club America from Hebron High School, or
- Allow students to establish a politically opposing organization under the same standards and conditions.
This petition is not about preventing students from having political beliefs. It is about ensuring that our school treats political expression fairly and does not provide one viewpoint with opportunities that are denied to others.
