Protect the Rights of Protesters in Illinois
Americans are embracing their right to protest. They are standing up and speaking out for racial, social, economic, and environmental justice. They should be listened to, engaged with in conversation, and treated with respect, care, and compassion. Instead these Americans are being silenced, brutalized, attacked, and arrested for their dissent. I am asking Mayor Lightfoot and Governor Pritzker to support and protect the rights of these American protesters and ensure the police brutality that is occurring so often now is stopped. I am asking for transparency and an honest investigation of the police brutality reports made by residents of Illinois since these protests started.
Why is this important?
America is not my country of birth but it was always my dream. I was lucky and able to come here, get an education, a job, and my citizenship. I have always been proud to be an American but right now as I am relearning and re-educating myself on so much of this country's horrific history, I clearly see how the American dream is in reality a nightmare for so many people, a nightmare that they have been stuck in for hundreds of years. Enough is enough. Things have to change for the betterment and for the human rights of Americans everywhere.
