Reinstate [alice] and 1956 to The University of Alabama's campus

[alice] and 1956, both newsmagazines run by University of Alabama students, have been suspended following U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi's memo on anti-discrimination laws, citing "proxy organizations" that focus on a specific demographic — in the case of [alice] and 1956, women and black students, specifically — as a form of discrimination that could potentially result in a loss of federal funding of public institutions. Both outlets have and continued to employ workers outside of their target demographic until their suspension, meaning that anti-discrimination does not necessarily apply in this case. This is, instead, a direct attack on free speech on a college campus and must be combatted by all students. Please sign this petition to urge the administration to reconsider their actions in these suspensions and reinstate both newsmagazines immediately. Why is this important?

This is only the beginning of a slippery slope — even if you don't care about [alice], 1956, or student journalism in general, this is a testing ground for the government and the current administration to see how far they can push. Whether or not you support the sitting president or his administration is irrelevant. This is about the First Amendment rights of all Americans, and the protection of the Fourth Estate. What starts with us ends with you, and when your speech is taken away, there will be no one left to prove that it happened.
