To: António Guterres, The Secretary-General of the United Nations

Release all arbitrarily detained individuals in Iran immediately and unconditionally.

The undersigned condemn the arbitrary arrest, detention, and mistreatment of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi, together with at least 39 other human rights defenders and activists, including Sepideh Gholian, Hasti Amiri, Pooran Nazemi, and Alieh Motlabzadeh, by the authorities of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

These actions constitute serious violations of Iran’s obligations under international law, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR)—to which Iran is a State Party—specifically Articles 7 (prohibition of torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment), 9 (freedom from arbitrary arrest and detention), 10 (humane treatment of persons deprived of liberty), and 19 (freedom of expression).

We express grave concern for the physical safety, health, and fundamental rights of Ms. Mohammadi and the other detainees. We call upon the Iranian authorities to immediately and unconditionally release all arbitrarily detained individuals, estimated at more than 50 persons; ensure their prompt access to adequate medical care, legal counsel, and family contact; and cease all forms of harassment, intimidation, and reprisals against human rights defenders.

We further urge the international community, including relevant United Nations mechanisms, to continue close monitoring of this case, to pursue accountability through available international procedures, and to take all appropriate measures to ensure compliance with Iran’s international human rights obligations.
