To: We want to show the city of Tucson that there is widespread support to rename this Westside Park in honor of “Sal” who was instrumental in its creation.

Rename Joaquin Murrieta Park to Salomon R. Baldenegro Park

Salomon Baldenegro was the Tucsonan most responsible for advocating for the establishment of the El Rio Neighborhood Centet and Joaquin Murrieta Park. As a leader of the El Rio Coalition in 1970, he and his allies pushed and persuaded the city to make the center and park a reality.

Now that Murrieta park is being renovated and the history of activism is being acknowledged, it is time and appropriate to rename the park to Salomon R Baldenegro Park. 

 By signing this petition you show your support for the park being renamed. 

Why is this important?

Sal has lived a lifetime of community advocacy and service. He has mentored hundreds of students while holding faculty and administrative positions at the University of Arizona and at Pima College Community College. 
In addition he served he served as President of the Western Little League which calls Murrieta Park their home base. He also participated in two master plan planning cycles for the renovation of the park.
