Below is a letter that was written to Vince Fong’s Office after the Post Office told them that they were not going to have a contract station in Squaw Valley.

Dear Congressman Fong and Staff,

I am writing to express deep concern—and growing frustration—regarding the lack of reliable postal services in the Squaw Valley community. The absence or potential loss of a functioning local post office is not a minor inconvenience; it is a serious issue that undermines the basic infrastructure our community depends on.

Squaw Valley is not an isolated afterthought—it is home to families, seniors, small business owners, and working individuals who rely on consistent mail service for essential needs. From receiving medications ( in a secure location) and legal documents to conducting business and maintaining communication, postal services are a lifeline. For many residents, especially those with limited mobility or transportation, traveling long distances for basic mail access is simply not feasible.

I really cannot believe your office is prepared to give up on this issue so easily. Many of us have experience with the Postal Service and understand that the first “no” is not the end of the conversation—it is the beginning of advocacy. The people of Squaw Valley are tired of being treated like an inconvenience rather than constituents who deserve equal access to essential services.

This frustration is compounded by a pattern of inaction. Your office did not meaningfully stand up for this community during the recent name change issue, despite the fact that Squaw Valley has deep historical roots, with some families spanning five generations or more. That history matters, and so does the present-day reality of the people who live here.

Let me be clear: This constituency that expects its elected representatives to actively advocate on its behalf. If you are seeking continued support from this community, then we need to see that support reciprocated through action—not silence or resignation.

Reliable postal service is not a luxury—it is a fundamental public service that should be accessible to all Americans, regardless of geography. We urge your office to take immediate and meaningful action. This includes advocating for the establishment, preservation, or restoration of a fully operational post office in Squaw Valley, ensuring adequate staffing, and addressing any logistical barriers that have led to the current situation.

Our community deserves the same level of service and attention afforded to more densely populated areas. We are asking for accountability, urgency, and a clear plan forward.

We look forward to your response and to seeing tangible progress on this critical issue.

Why is this important?

The people of Squaw Valley, CA 93675 have a deep-rooted history. In the late 1800s, our community fought hard to establish a post office. Today, in 2026, descendants of the original postmaster and early residents still live here.

Our local contract post office has always been centrally located in town, near the gas station, store, and other businesses—making it convenient and accessible for everyone. With its closure, residents will now have to travel nearly 10 miles up the mountain to the Dunlap Post Office, which offers far less convenience.

Many post office box holders are seniors and small business owners who rely on the current location. After long workdays down the mountain, they can easily stop in town to pick up their mail. Losing this service means going out of their way, adding unnecessary travel time and expense.

This closure is especially frustrating because the Postal Service has refused to allow another contract station to replace the current one.

Please support our community in preserving local access to essential postal services.
