Save The Advertising Art Program at SUN Tech, New Berlin
Good evening,
I have recently learned SUN Tech is considering removing the Advertising Art Program.
As a student who was enrolled in the "Printing" class for 2000, which was shut down on the 2nd day of classes, and was tossed into the Ad Art class, I am doubly saddened.
There's no easy path for "art" careers. From painting to film production, artists are called grifters and told it's not a real job. Art school is expensive and unattainable to many. Degrees are not always required in these settings, so the job field is saturated.
What the Advertising Art program at SUN Tech gave me was the ability to touch a dozen art career paths (sketching and painting; drawing and animation; sculpting; photography; art deco; journalism; print media layout and programming; fashion design; advertising; graphic design; communications; production; editing) and the skill set to pursue a career in any of them. It gave me a place to practice my craft and and work toward a niché, something many artists don't begin to work on until much later, without an early, technical education. It offered me half a dozen more employable skills without a degree (typing; computer input; copy editing; proofreading; public speaking), ALL of which I have put to physical use in gainful employment. It gave me the opportunity to take (and pass) the NOCTI exam at the end of the year, setting young artists up with a LIGHTENING ROD of potential to get a HEAD START on a lifetime of success.
Art programs are the first thing to go, yet take a quick look at your watch, your shoes, your refrigerator, now up at Carrie Underwood singing, "Waiting All Day for Sunday Night," where EVERYTHING from the TV set, the computer graphics and AI on screen, to the design of the NFL stadium, the textile on her bodysuit, and the cupcakes they ate off-set began with an ARTIST. Fashion Design, Computer Graphics and Programming, Music and Sound Production, Appliance Design Engineering. Photo and Videography. Pastry Design.
All "Art Careers". All technical skills. All attainable through a head start in the Art career pathways taught in the Advertising Art Program at Sun Tech.
Artist seem seem to lose support every time we turn around. Don't give in to the trend. Give our young artists the same head start you give our young nurses and automotive professionals. Please do NOT get rid of the Advertising Art program at the SUN Area Career and Technology Center.
