Say NO to Another Edison Park Vape Shop
We do not need two VAPE shops within a two block section of our downtown Edison Park Community. The sign outside the storefront on 6721 N. Northwest Highway reads, "Smokes N Kicks" and says it will sell "Shoes, Vapes, Glass and Tobacco." A larger than life Michael Jordan mural shines through the floor to ceiling glass windows in the high foot traffic area- likely to promote the sale of gym shoes while surrounded by vape, tobacco and glass products. This is a marketing stunt that will irresponsibly lure children to the store in the heart of where families walk to enjoy local restaurants, parks and retail shops. This is steps away from Ebinger Elementary School, Edison Park Church and Montessori School, Blackhawk Park, Edison Park Field House, Monument Park, Olympia Park and in the backyard of Resurrection H.S., St. Juliana Parish and Edison Park Schools. There has been no public notice. No opportunity for public comment. Please sign this petition to send a strong message that we do not want another vape shop in our community while we gather information from the City of Chicago to evaluate and plan our next steps.
Why is this important?
This is steps from where children go to school and play. We are talking about a high foot traffic area that will have two vape shops in a two block radius that is family oriented and where kids are active.
Vapes and e-cigarettes are very similar as they both do not produce smoke or smell so its easy for children to disguise. According to the CDC, they are highly addictive and can harm adolescent brain development, which continues into the early to mid-20s. They can contain other harmful substances besides nicotine and are often interchangeable with “e-cigs,” “vapes,” “e-hookahs,” “vape pens,” and “electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS).” More info here- Most e-cigarettes contain nicotine.
