S.55, which would set up a task force to examine state government banking and financial functions to determine such issues as how much risk current practices place our public money under and exploring other ways of conducting activities which might be less risky and provide better outcomes for the state and its citizens, has been approved by two senate committees with 11 senators voting in favor of it and 0 voting against it. Currently this bill is stuck in the Appropriations Committee with no action on it scheduled. I urge you, members of the Appropriations Committee, to act expeditiously in releasing this bill to the Senate floor for a vote of the full Senate.

The El Dorado County Continuum of the Care is requesting that the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors allocate a portion of the General Plan, Housing Element implementation budget to support funding for the Homeless Coordinator position for six months. Allocation Request: $9000 Total Budget (Homeless Coordinator): $18,000 The 2008-2013 General Plan Housing Element, Measure HO-24, states that The County of El Dorado will: “continue working with community and local organizations on a monthly basis to provide community education on homelessness, gaining better understanding of the unmet need, and developing and maintaining emergency shelter programs, including funding for programs developed through inter-jurisdictional cooperation and working with local organizations to annually apply for the End Chronic Homelessness through Employment and Housing grant. The expected outcome of this measure is to build upon the 2007 Continuum of Care Strategy and develop a 10-year plan to end chronic homelessness that provides the County opportunities to meet the needs of the chronically homeless population in our jurisdiction.”

I have visited Maverick Farms in Valle Crucis and seen the amazing work that they are doing. The idea that taxpayer money will be used to cause environmental and economic ruin to maverick farms seems the opposite of what Watauga County stands for as a leader in fostering sustainable agriculture and protecting family farms. I urge the DOT reconsider its plan to virtually destroy any chance that Maverick Farms can continue its work on the Justus Road land and its outreach in the community. Please consult with the Wilsons and other community members to come up with a plan for Justus Road that doesn't destroy this vital community asset.
