  • Restore voting rights to disenfranchised ex-felons
According to "The Sentencing Project" (http://www.sentencingproject.org/), close to six million convicted felons are barred from voting in over 29 states. Please sign my petition demanding that our law makers pass legislation that will restore the inalienable right to vote to ex-felons immediately.

  • Stop Using Worker Pensions to Hurt Workers
Workers at the Embassy Suites hotel in Irvine, CA, have been standing up to management about the abuses they’ve endured. The hotel is owned through investments from public pensions, including the pension system for thousands of public employees in Los Angeles County, known as LACERA.
It makes no sense that money invested to ensure a secure retirement for social workers, nurses, firefighters and librarians is being used in ways that hurt other workers!

  • Stop Defense Authorization Bill from stepping on the Sixth Amendment
A section in the 2012 National Defense Authorization Act conflicts directly with the Sixth Amendment by giving the military the right to indefinitely detain anyone, including United States citizens, without trial and to continue to detain citizens of the United States without having to provide burden of proof to a judge. False arguments have been made by Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.) that the "requirement to detain a person in military custody under this section does not extend to citizens of the United States.” That argument is, in fact, untrue because the section does 'let' the government detain a citizen in military custody, but not force it to do that. So they have the power to do so but they don't have to exercise it. They STILL have the power, under this section, to do so at will. The other argument states that the person can only be held, without trial, until the end of a stated conflict under the guise of which they were arrested. Given the breadth and depth and unarguably the length of recent 'conflicts' this could be most of a persons productive life. This section must be stripped from the 2012 National Defense Authorization Act before it is allowed implementation. Another way must be found to protect our country and freedoms without removing the protections that ensure our freedom.

  • Save the Catherine Ferguson Academy for Single Moms in Detroit, MI.
Please, ACLU! This is our request to ask you to file a stay in court to keep the Catherine Ferguson Academy open! Their plan to close June 17th, 2011 gives us little time to prevent this great loss in Detroit from happening. The students at the school are all single Mothers are choosing life, choosing love and need a little guidance and education to help them achieve stability in their lives. Having an opportunity to provide for themselves and their children is the greatest gift society can give!! Please help us make this first step which would allow us the time to show the whole country of America how we support single Mothers and their children!! Thank you!

  • Please Help! Pain Patients Are Dying! Support Illinois HB 5373!
In Illinois, pain patients are a marginalized, highly vulnerable, stigmatized community. Pain medicine prescriptions continue to decrease, as doctors become afraid of legal reprisal, but we have a record number of overdose fatalities. Previously stable patients on long-term pain therapy have taken their lives, died from un or under treated pain (the number 1 cause of global mortality), been forced by desperate circumstances to resort to the illicit market, which exponentially increased fatalities. Illinois has one of the lowest prescribing rates in the US but the 14th highest number of deadly overdoses. Recent data reveals that not a single overdose fatality is attributable to prescription pain medicine. State agencies substitute their judgment for doctors and destroy the sanctity of the doctor-patient relationship. Many people are unaware of the toll that restrictive state policies have taken on Illinoisans. Oncologists have decreased prescriptions by 50%. Children with terminal illnesses are denied pain relief. Veterans, who became injured serving our country, have lost access to their medicine—to such an extent that suicides increased by over 1/3. Millions of Illinoisans are one accident away from being chronic pain patients, are impacted by chronic pain themselves, and/or are affected because they are the friend, caretaker, loved one, or other part of a chronic pain patient’s life. Even palliative care and hospice specialists turn people away because they’re afraid of legal consequences. The American Pain & Disability Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization that tries to protect the pain community. We see firsthand, in our advocacy, practitioners who won't give terminally ill children pain medicine; veterans who served us but are now in terrible pain from combat injuries, and more---but we can't protect doctors and patients as they need to be protected without legislation. We also have an existing healthcare and medication shortage, which is made much worse every time a practitioner gives up or faces reprisal. Our website is www.4APDF.org. Current policies harm one of our most vulnerable communities. You can help fix this! Please support HB 5373 to protect chronic pain patients and their doctors—millions of lives depend on it!

  • House GOP: Do not repeal the Endangered Species Act
Recent news reports quoted you saying you want to "repeal and replace" the Endangered Species Act. This law is wildly popular and has a 99% success rate. It doesn't need repealing or replacing. Please abandon your misguided attempts to repeal, weaken, replace, or otherwise change the Endangered Species Act.
