Trump is ramping up his militarized power grab, announcing a hostile federal takeover of our nation’s capital. He is seizing the city’s police department and deploying 800+ National Guard troops to descend upon the residents and punish anyone who disagrees with his MAGA agenda.  This is a brazen abuse of power—and it won’t stop at Washington, D.C. This is Trump’s plan for cities across the country. Trump intends to build a police state right out of an authoritarian playbook. War hawks, including defense contractors, AIPAC, and AI companies, are trying to buy elections and Democrats to extend the unpopular, deadly, and costly war in Iran. They’re spending hundreds of millions of dollars in dark money to defeat pro-diplomacy Democrats and distracting from real priorities like health care and rising costs. These groups have no interest in helping everyday Americans and care only about advancing war and their own bottom lines. We demand that Democrats reject contributions from War Hawks and focus on delivering real results that will improve our lives. 

The Trump administration is ramping up its attacks on civil rights groups—now indicting the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), a racial justice organization based in the South that has been working for more than 50 years to build a society where Black and Brown communities can thrive.  Trump has weaponized the Department of Justice (DOJ) to indict SPLC on bogus charges related to their now defunct “informant program,” which was used to gather critical intelligence on extremist groups.  This indictment is a blatant attack on our rights and the organizations and leaders who work to protect everyday people from hate and discrimination. We're calling this what it is: retaliation. Demand the DOJ drop these charges against the SPLC and stop their politically motivated attacks on organizations and leaders.

April 28, 2020 REPARATIONS to Black Americans Now!!! It is clear that descendants of Black Americans that were kidnapped from Africa and forced to work for free for hundreds of years in America deserve to be compensated for their labor, pain and suffering. The major beneficiary of slavery was the United States Government. Since slave owners did not have to pay slave labor costs, they made exorbitant profits which equated to increased governmental taxes paid to the government. Those taxes made the United States one of the wealthiest countries in the world and literally built this country. Without the substantial taxes generated by slave owners, the United States would have been arguably a third-world country. This free forced labor force even physically built major government buildings including the White House. The wealth created by White Slave Owners during slavery is still with their families today and the descendants of the kidnapped Africans have none of that wealth. The federal government should compensate descendants of slaves with a federal purchasing set-aside program (similar to the current Federal 8A Set-Side Program) awarding 25% of all money spent for goods and services to businesses owned 51% by Black Americans that were descendants of slaves. The language included in the current Federal 8A Set-Aside Program could be utilized increasing the set-aside to 25% to descendant of slaves only (of all goods and services purchased) and the term for each eligible business to 225 years (from the current 9 years). All public money spent at all levels should be included in the set-aside program (schools, hospitals, governments, etc.). The term of the program should be 225 years, the length of slavery in America. Other minorities would not be included. If you are not a direct descendant of American slaves, you would not be eligible. Mexican, Asian, Middle Eastern and even African people that came to America to gain a better life and were not kidnapped, forced into slavery and abused in America would not be eligible for the set-aside. This reparation program would go a long way to right the wrongs perpetrated on Blacks in America. Executive Order 10865 requires a hearing in which contractor employees would be given the opportunity to appear before the decision-maker to confront and cross-examine witnesses and attempt to rebut the Government's case.

Paul Ryan just held a news conference and with a straight face hailed his achievement in passing legislation that strips millions of chronically ill taxpayers of their itemized deduction for medical expenses. Laughably, he boasts of closing a loophole. Our only hope rests with the Senate -- please sign my petition and do whatever it takes to pressure them not to abandon the sick!

As a constituent in your ward, I am asking you to support the Fair Elections Illinois campaign to create a small donor match campaign finance system in the City of Chicago. An increase in small donors in electoral campaigns will decrease the reliance on large special interests, and increase political participation and the value of small donors. Most importantly, it will give you the time to engage with your constituents and address issues in our ward, instead of having to spend valuable time fundraising from special interests.
