  • Petition to regulate semi-automatic guns
Almost none of the many proposals being talked about by the President, Congress, or the NRA would have prevented or reduced our recent mass shootings or the 8,000 plus gun homicides every year. This petition requests that the government regulate semi-automatic firearms in the same manner and for the same reasons that machine guns were regulated. The only gun related petitions on the White House web site are of the “keep your hands off my guns” variety. If you feel that the numbers of guns that can fire high volumes of bullets in seconds and are easily available to everyone are a problem: 1. Go to http://wh.gov/vG6C and vote in favor of the petition asking that semi-automatic guns be regulated in the same way that machine guns are regulated. 2. Forward this e-mail to your friends so they can vote for it This petition will not be seen by the public until 150 individuals have voted for it. If 150 individuals vote in favor, the general public will be able to see and vote for the petition. The average soldier in World War I did not carry a semi-automatic rifle. The average German, Japanese, Russian, British or French soldier in World War II did not carry a semi-automatic rifle. Korea was fought on all sides without detachable magazine rifles. Most of the guns used in the last 68 massacres and last year’s 8,000+ homicides were semi-automatic guns. A machine gun fires, reloads, and fires again as long as the trigger is held down. In response to seven deaths in the 1929 Saint Valentine's Day Massacre, Congress regulated machine guns. As a result, machine gun homicides are almost unheard of today. A semi-automatic gun fires, reloads, and fires again as fast as the trigger can be pulled. Semi-automatic guns are the weapons that make it possible to have mass shootings, such as the elementary school in CT, the movie theater in CO, and drive-by shootings into homes and crowds from moving automobiles. In response to 12 deaths in a CO movie theater, Congress did nothing. In response to 26 deaths in a CT elementary school, Congress did nothing. In response to 8,000+ firearm homicides last year, Congress did nothing. As a result, we can expect 8,000+ more gun homicides this year, plus a massacre at a college, a high school, an elementary school, a preschool or a school bus.

  • Governor Rick Scott: STOP THE EROSION OF TENANT PROTECTIONS FROM FLORIDA’S LANDLORD TENANT ACT
VETO HB 77 - PROTECT AND DO NOT ERODE THE ALREADY LIMITED FLORIDA RENTER'S RIGHTS. Changes sought to Florida’s Residential Landlord Tenant Act by SB 490 erode tenant protections and create more confusion than clarity to the Act, placing Florida’s 5 million residential tenants in jeopardy. This delete-all amendment proposed in Regulated Industries would, among other things: ALLOW LANDLORDS TO EVICT WITHOUT NOTICE FOR MINOR VIOLATIONS Subject tenants to eviction without a termination notice by removing the requirement of the notice of termination in cases of a “right to cure” violation. For example, a college student parking in the wrong space anytime during a 12-month period after notice would be subject to eviction without notice and may have no idea why they are being evicted. (Section 8, 83.56 (2) (b)) CREATE A “PAY WHAT YOU CAN” PRACTICE BUT RISKING EVICTION Allow the landlord to accept partial rent and still evict the tenant – allowing landlord’s to abuse tenant’s by encouraging them to “pay what you have” but still evicting them, with no guarantee the tenant will receive a receipt or that the landlord will indicate the partial payment if an eviction is filed. (Section 8, 83.56(5)(a) RENDER EVICTION NOTICES FOR APARTMENTS MEANINGLESS Allows landlords and their attorneys’ unlimited opportunity to “fix” notices no matter how glaring the error. Completely erodes the purpose of the notices – to provide tenants an opportunity to save their homes – since there will be no repercussions for inadequate notices. (Section 11, 83.60(1)(a)) TENANTS GET ONE SCREEN REPAIR A YEAR Current law requires landlords to maintain screens, crucial to the low income saving money on utilities. This bill bizarrely limits screen repair to once a year. HB77 would give unscrupulous Landlords more power to initiate retaliatory evictions, for instance, if a tenant complains to an agency because they have no windows, leaking ceilings, no water, heat, etc. Working class renters ARE at risk already, especially if they cannot afford counsel. We need more laws to protect tenants, anything less will most likely cause an increase in homelessness, and a housing crisis for those who fall at the hand of irresponsible Landlords and the laws that protect them. Protect Florida’s Tenants! DO NOT SIGN HB 77, VETO HB 77 AND VOTE NO ON HB 77

  • The People's Power Agenda
We the undersigned, members of the NEW American Revolution are more than Democrats, Republicans and Independents, we are Americans. American voters to be precise and we demand an end to the dysfunction in our government. We Demand... 1. The creation of a “Penny for your Debts Tax”, a .01 tax on every $1.00 of stock, bond or derivative traded and any other financial speculation to go directly towards our National debt. 2. A budget that leaves Social Security changes of any kind “off the table” until the Social Security fund has been paid in full, the $2.7 T it is owed by the United States of America. 3. Pass the American Anti-Corruption Act: a law that would overhaul campaign finance, impose strict lobbying and conflict of interest laws, and end secret political money. 4. Passage of a bill that addresses the immediate crisis facing America, the Jobs deficit. 5. Passage of common sense gun control legislation that is supported by the “People” and NOT the gun lobby (NRA or groups like it). 6. Repeal the 2006 Postal Accountability Enhancement Act (PAEA) which mandates that the US Postal Service fully fund the health benefits of future retirees. 7. Pass Fair and Humane Immigration Reform with a clear pathway to citizenship. 8. Reduce carbon pollution by 17 percent below 2005 levels by 2020. 9. Reduce ‘short-lived climate pollutants’ by including a phase out of hydro-fluorocarbons in the Montreal Protocol. 10. Limit the production of dirty tar sands oil by rejecting the Keystone XL pipeline. 11. Establish federal policies that increase demand for clean electricity 12. Reform the tax code to favor clean, renewable energy and end Big Oil tax breaks and subsidies. 13. Establish a heavy tax on carbon emissions and major regulation of coal, oil and gas companies including holding them fully responsible and financially accountable for accidents without litigation. 14. Establish science-based policies that enhance and enforce the Clean Water Act of 1972 in order to protect important streams and wetlands. 15. Remove the 60 vote threshold that is needed to stop a filibuster in the United States Senate, which has been an obstruction of our democracy. 16. Put a permanent end to “Too Big To Fail” and “Too Big To Jail” banking policies and re-authorize Glass/Steagall.

  • Give Oklahoma Parents the Right to Opt Their Children Out of High Stakes Testing
We, as parents, grandparents, relatives and friends of public school students want the legislature to give us the right to opt our children out of high stakes testing. The state of Oklahoma has a complex system of standardized tests that are required of all students in grades 3-12, with the exception of those attending either a public school with a special exemption waiver or a private school. The results from these standardized tests are used to measure individual student achievement, determine grade retention and high school graduation, rate individual schools, compare school districts on a statewide report card, and evaluate teachers and principals despite flaws in the validity and reliability of these tests. We, the undersigned parents/guardians, educators, and residents of Oklahoma are concerned about the ever-increasing over-reliance on results from standardized tests to measure student learning. We believe the state of Oklahoma is moving in the wrong direction on this issue and needs to responsibly assess the limitations of relying on these tests for so many critically important decisions that warrant the use of a more robust set of indicators of student learning and school and district progress. The state also needs to examine the opportunity costs of high-stakes testing. In many schools, preparation for high-stakes testing has come to dominate curriculum and instruction, to the exclusion of more-comprehensive and substantive education. We demand that Oklahoma develop a process by which parents/guardians concerned about the impacts of testing on student learning can voluntarily opt their children out of standardized testing. There are a number of other large states, including California and Pennsylvania, with clear policies and procedures in place that allow parents to request that children not participate in standardized testing. We demand that the state begin by immediately developing and implementing a non-punitive opt-out process for parents of elementary school children, as there is a large body of research questioning the validity of test results for younger children. Students at all grade levels are negatively affected by high-stakes testing, but such testing is particularly detrimental to the mental and physical health of young children, as the stress placed on children and families at an early age can interfere with the formation of a positive relationship with school and inhibit learning. We further demand that all plans to expand testing to include younger children, from pre-kindergarten through second grade, be halted until a comprehensive examination of the potential impact of such tests is conducted and presented to the public.

  • Demand Governor Bill Haslam hold Warren County Sheriff responsible
On August 8, 2012 a stray dog (now named Corona) was brutally attacked and shot. Her attack was not provoked or warranted. When the Warren County Humane Society filed a police report, they were told by the Deputy that maybe "The shooter was just shooting the mean out of her." The Sheriff's office has not been investigating. This animal was shot in a rural area where only 12 homes were in the vicinity. An investigation would not be time tasking, yet the Sheriff has not completed one. A few days later, a family owned dog, 1 year old Jake was shot three times in front of witnesses in Warren County. The dog, Jake was friendly and the shooting was unwarranted. The shooting of this dog was next to a children's outdoor birthday party. This shooter not only committed a class E felony by shooting an animal that was not portraying any aggression, he also endangered the lives of children. Warren County Sheriff refused to press charges or come out to the house when called. The Sheriff does not have the legal right to disregard the laws: 39-14-205 intentional killing of animals section A1. which reads A person who intentionally or knowingly unlawfully kills the animal of another, with the intent to deprive the owner of the right to the animals life and without the owner's effective consent commits theft of that animal and shall be punished under 39-14-105 Also 3911-621 reads: That a private citizen can not use or threaten to use deadly force except to the extent authorized under self defense or defense of third person statutes 39-11-611 and 39-11-612. The shooter was not defending anyone and therefore broke this law. He also endangered the lives of children by unjustifiably firing a gun 3 times in their vicinity. The shooter has caused painful emotional trauma to the children that had to witness this brutal murder of a family pet. The Warren County Sheriff has demonstrated a clear lack of respect for the laws and the safety of his citizens. His tolerance and acceptance for cruel animal abuse begs the question is he ethically fit for his position? We who sign this petition demand that the Governor and Tennessee state legislation ensure that the laws Sheriff Matheny has disregarded are upheld. The people and the animals of Warren County deserve this. Animal cruelty and endangering the safety of all citizens can not be tolerated.

  • JUSTICE FOR JOHN LOXAS
At the very least, I would like Scottsdale Police answer the following questions: 1) Why no taser used? Was it too windy? Why no dog? And please Sgt. Mark Clark, no "holier than thou" how dare you even ask that question. Not a single officer said Mr. Loxas had a weapon when Ofc. Peters killed him. Why is Scottsdale PD throwing around the fact Ofc. Peters was a "veteran" like they did in the Sgt. Prostrollo shooting? Why should that matter? 2) Why did Scottsdale PD say at the first press conference at 11 am, some 12 hours after the shooting and after the search warrant had already been executed, that "no gun was recovered", but only a couple of hours later claim Mr. Loxas had a gun within "lunge distance" and his home was loaded like an armory? 3) Why is Scottsdale PD smearing Mr. Loxas with cheap shots like about how dirty his house was, that CPS had been called, that he has mental problems, and why are they telling the world that on the 911 call a neighbor advised Mr. Loxas might need to be shot? What does that have to do with anything other than slurs to defend Scottsdale PD's action by the lowest means available? 4) This one really stinks: why did they say at the first press conference only one officer out of 6 saw something in Mr. Loxas' hands, but now that number is 2, including Ofc. Peters standing 18 feet away while looking through a scope centered on Mr. Loxas' head? And what did they claim they saw? Does anyone actually think any officer really believes he saw something in Mr. Loxas' hands? That is rotten. 5) Finally, did Scottsdale PD command bring in Ofc. Peters to take a kill shot? Was that why he was on the scene? A reporter essentially asked Sgt. Mark Clark that question yesterday at the afternoon press conference, and Sgt. Clark refused to answer the question in front of cameras. If Mr. Loxas was an imminent threat, why did only Ofc. Peters, one among 6 officers, shoot and kill? Wouldn't all the officers have seen the same exact thing and reacted the same?

  • Let's take back our country !
Warren Buffett, in a recent interview with CNBC, offers one of the best quotes about the debt ceiling: "I could end the deficit in 5 minutes," he told CNBC. "You just pass a law that says that anytime there is a deficit of more than 3% of GDP, all sitting members of Congress are ineligible for re-election” The 26th amendment (granting the right to vote for 18 year-olds) took only 3 months & 8 days to be ratified! Why? Simple! The people demanded it. That was in 1971...before computers, e-mail, cell phones, etc. Of the 27 amendments to the Constitution, seven (7) took 1 year or less to become the law of the land...all because of public pressure. In three days, most people in The United States of America will have the message. This is one idea that really should be passed around. Congressional Reform Act of 2011 1. No Tenure / No Pension. A Congressman collects a salary while in office and receives no pay when they are out of office. 2. Congress (past, present & future) participates in Social Security. All funds in the Congressional retirement fund move to the Social Security system immediately. All future funds flow into the Social Security system, and Congress participates with the American people. It may not be used for any other purpose. 3. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan, just as all Americans do. 4. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise. Congressional pay will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%. 5. Congress loses their current health care system and participates in the same health care system as the American people. 6. Congress must equally abide by all laws they impose on the American people. 7. All contracts with past and present Congressmen are void effective 1/1/12. The American people did not make this contract with Congressmen. Congressmen made all these contracts for themselves. Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, so ours should serve their term(s), then go home and back to work. If each person contacts a minimum of twenty people then it will only take three days for most people (in the U.S.) to receive the message. Maybe it is time. THIS IS HOW YOU FIX CONGRESS!!!!! If you agree with the above, pass it on. If not, just delete. You are one of my 20+.. Please keep it going.

  • End Veterans found frozen to death
I would like to propose a jobs program in memory of Bradley Sutter. I propose that Solar heating be installed for the homes of senior veterans as well as homeless shelters for veterans. A senior veteran should not have to choose between heating, food, or medical supplies.
