I am a student at a Marion County Public School, and I have personally experienced the consequences of our school's failure to recognize self-defense as a student right. Our current policy maintains zero tolerance towards violence, even when it is an act of self-defense. This approach is not only unfair but also potentially harmful for students who find themselves in situations where they need to protect themselves. In 2018, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) reported that zero-tolerance policies can lead to negative outcomes for students, including increased likelihood of dropping out and involvement with the juvenile justice system. Furthermore, according to the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP), such policies do not necessarily improve school safety or climate. It is crucial that we differentiate between aggression and self-defense. Students should have the right to protect themselves without fear of disciplinary action when their safety is threatened. We must advocate for a more nuanced understanding of violence within our schools' rules and regulations. We call on Marion County Public Schools to revise their current policy and recognize self-defense as a student right. This change will ensure fair treatment for all students while maintaining safety within our schools. The bill, called the REINS Act, requires that any future major regulation adopted by an Executive Agency — say a new toxic chemical standard required by the recently enacted Chemical Safety Act, or a new consumer protection rule about some innovative but untested kind of food additive — must be approved by a specific resolution in each House of Congress within 70 days to take effect. Congress totally lacks the technical competence to review these kinds of complex rules. Do we really want members of Congress deciding whether a chemical can safely be used in food packaging? Or the proper procedures for approving new drugs as safe and effective? Or setting the allowable safety standard for heavy metals in drinking water? The House of Representatives passed this, as one would think, completely along party lines, with the bought and paid for GOP passing it. It’s time — past time — for a massive mobilization to make clear to Congress and the new President that a wholesale repeal of 40 years of progress in environmental protection, civil rights, labor standards, health and safety and consumer protection is not acceptable, and that pretending that the REINS act increases accountability is completely untrue.

On September 15, 2016, David Rae, a disabled father with sole custody of a 12-year-old autistic daughter in Rio Rancho, NM, had his daughter removed from his custody based upon discrimination of his disability. A Colorado Child Legal Representative lied in court to influence a new Colorado Judge that was unfamiliar with the case. Mounting evidence had proven to the previous judge that David is a capable parent. The case was extended to the home state of the father and child, where no CYFD investigation was performed and no evidence was presented. The child was removed by a Colorado and New Mexico Civil Court Order and placed with the aunt who has a personal relationship with a deputy of the Sandoval County Court. It is the end of November, the case still sits in Colorado and in New Mexico courts awaiting a New Mexico Child Legal Representative to come on board. To date, no evidence has been presented. CYFD has no findings of abuse or neglect. David has been denied the ability to defend himself or speak in court. The case has been decided upon based on hearsay.
