  • Court Overturns PA's Voter ID Law. Tell Gov. Corbett Not to Appeal
I agree with Commonwealth Court Judge Bernard McGinley. Voter ID is "invalid and unconstitutional on its face." Do not appeal the voter ID law to the Supreme Court.

  • Jumpstarting Laser Cutter for South Campus
Dear Mr. Fehlau, This letter is in regard to the long-awaited laser-cutting machine for the Media Design and Fine Arts graduate students. Currently, the machine is installed on site at south campus, but there are a couple issues that prevent us from making full use of it; i.e. a fume cabinet and a new card reader. We understand that it takes time it takes to implement new systems. However, the equipment is sitting unused in our studio and having a functioning laser cutter during weeks 12-14 would be extremely useful in completing our coursework. Even it is only operational on a part-time basis, it would save us valuable time commuting to Hillside to use their facilities and also free up both staff hours and equipment time for undergraduate students. Please let us know what would be the next step going forward to make this possible. We value the excellent education we are receiving at Art Center and the community of Fine Arts and Media Design that has been established at south campus since 2009. Our newly elected Grad Representative for ACSG, Geoff Ka’alani, is happy to meet with you to represent our interests. Thank you in advance for your consideration. We look forward to hearing from you soon.

  • Community Open Letter in Support of Current DCARA Board
We, the Bay Area Deaf Community and our supporters, call on you to immediately withdraw your legal actions and accept the wishes of our community for new leadership on DCARA's Board and the continuance of DCARA's Executive Director, Raymond Rodgers. We are members of the San Francisco Bay Area Deaf Community, which includes Deaf, Hard of Hearing, Late-Deafened, and DeafBlind people. We write this open letter to you in regard to the Deaf organization that is dear to all of us, Deaf Counseling Advocacy and Referral Agency (DCARA), because we believe that you have placed the organization in great peril. DCARA is a critically important nonprofit agency that serves the SF Bay Area Deaf community by promoting and advocating for the rights of full access to American Sign Language and English, education, employment, and cultural identity of, by, for, and with our community. In February 2019, Judy Gough, the then DCARA Board President, posted a video-blog on her personal Facebook page in which she directed racist comments toward a Black Deaf American man and his daughter. Deaf community members and DCARA’s staff confronted the Board with the intention of educating them on racial microaggressions and encouraging awareness of implicit bias. The Board, that some of you were part of, reacted in anger and denial of their racist behavior, supported Gough, and retaliated by firing staff members. By these actions, your Board created a huge backlash in our community. Those who take racist actions, and those that support them, have no place in the Bay Area Deaf community, and no business being in a leadership role at DCARA. At a Board and community meeting on May 21, 2019, three of the Board members (including two of you) entered into an agency agreement in which the Board agreed to resign and allow a new Board to be selected by a diverse, community-led recruitment process. Five new Board members were selected by this recruitment committee, were installed in September 2019, and have been successfully leading the agency ever since.

  • Police Reform
Support police reform to help weed out bad cops and the culture that stops good cops from doing their jobs. To do this we need laws to help State and local law enforcement make these changes and educate ourselves.  update the application of qualified immunity  Prohibit chokeholds / other carotid holds and no knock warrants  Change the threshold for the permissible use of force  Require continuous training programs to include racial bias and and de-escalation tactics  Require uniformed police officers to utilize body cameras and vehicles to have dashboard camera, with mandatory disciplinary action if not done.  Require a national registry of police misconduct complaints, disciplinary actions, or abuse of power. Collect data on use of force incidents.  Estabilsh a special unit for mental health cases/calls/response  Demilitarize police departments.  Require school systems to provide a class for seniors to understand their rights under the laws of their local government
