  • Boycott Burger King: A Whopper of a Mistake
    Burger King buying Tim Horton to take advantage of a tax haven in Canada is self-serving and inappropriate. Taking the tax inversion means that profits from Americans buying Whoppers and other BK products will no longer be tax revenue for the U.S. Tell Congress to stop rewarding companies that dodge their responsibility to support the country that helps makes them successful. New legislation to prohibit these strategies should be passed immediately.

  • Just say "no" to fracking!
    Governor Cuomo: There is no safe way to do horizontal hydraulic fracking. Hydrofracking is more polluting than coal. The large amount of uncaptured methane, wasted in the extreme method of fracking, contributes 100 times more to global warming compared to the carbon dioxide emission of coal burning. Extreme waste and toxification of drinking water in the processs is also an urgent issue. Do not allow fracking in New York - be an example to the nation!

    I am deeply disappointed that our new Interior Secretary, Sally Jewell, has just proposed rules that fail to protect our national parks and forests from fracking. In 2011, your own advisory panel recommended that "unique and/or sensitive areas" should be kept "off limits to drilling." Please tell Secretary Jewell to follow that directive and keep our forests and parks free from fracking.

  • Being human is not "illegal"
    We urge you to encourage all members who are reporters for news outlets, and not just AP reporters, to abandon the label "illegals" for immigrants whose status is in doubt. We hope reporters will instead employ verbiage and coverage that does not carelessly tag people with such a label who are innocent of violating any law but have found themselves in a circumstance unprovided for by our laws, which no person could have avoided.
