You may have heard that yesterday President Obama made an offer to Republican John Boehner to cut Social Security benefits and leave in place some of the Bush tax cuts for the top 2%. The cuts in Social Security are opposed by an overwhelming majority of SignOn.org members and would amount to "a cut of more than 5 percent and more as the years go by." Congress: Please defend our public schools and oppose HR 610. Taking essential support from public schools and putting it into vouchers for private school students is dangerous and misguided. We’re calling on Microsoft to immediately end its partnership with the NYPD on the Domain Awareness System. In 2008, Microsoft partnered with the NYPD to create the Domain Awareness System (DAS), a dystopian surveillance command center that would make George Orwell shudder. It's been in use ever since. Microsoft has sought public support for its refusal to sell police facial recognition, but that was never was one of their products. Meanwhile, the NYPD is set to spend $31.4 million more on the DAS in 2020 alone. The question is, will Microsoft put the millions of dollars ahead of its newfound principles? [R-AZ-4] has proposed a new bill HR 482 and SB 103, which represents a direct attack on the collection, storage, and distribution of geospatial information, antiracism work, and affordable housing. The goal of this bill is to eliminate data used to support social change, which clearly stands at odds with the pursuit of knowledge about human geography, including census data. This bill would prohibit a significant amount of academic work on race, racism, and fair housing in the US, as well as GIS research more broadly, all of which work towards social justice.
