  • Hazard Pay and Protective Gear for Grocery and Pharmacy Workers
One of the most affecting scenes in HBO’s Chernobyl series was of Russian coal miners digging tunnels under the nuclear reactor to prevent contamination of the Black Sea. They worked naked – without protective gear – and without any assurances that their families would be provided for if they perished. Today in the US, it seems grocery and pharmacy cashiers and take-out restaurant workers are playing the part of naked coal miners. Like our medical professionals, these low-paid workers are playing a critical role during this time of quarantine. They’re exposed to daily threats while the rest of us practice social distancing from the comfort of our homes. And, just as with the medical professionals, our government is not doing enough to protect their health and safety.

  • Stop H1B abuse
H1B visa abuse by corporate America has created an underclass of tech workers who are now temp workers. No benefits, no vacation pay, no nothing. Wages are also very stagnant. Corporations act like spoiled children when they interview job candidates. H1B creates the wrong incentives: Companies hire cheap workers, Indians and/or Americans, while the domestic workforce has no incentives to study tech in college because the prospects are dim. • Sandburg Elementary Before School Care
There is limited to no facilities and space in our immediate community to support the parents and families of Sandburg Elementary School students for before school care. Sandburg Elementary has been designated by the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) as a “late start” school site where classes begin at 8:35 am. This means that according to the school district, students should not be dropped off before 8:25 am, which is the time that teacher and staff contract hours begin. If you are a working parent or caregiver and need to drop your child off at Sandburg Elementary School before 8:25 am please sign this petition in support of the MMSD providing a sustainable before school childcare solution to support children and families in the Sandburg Elementary attendance area.
