Shut Down the MIRA Incinerator in Hartford

For decades, the Materials Innovation and Recycling Authority (MIRA) Incinerator has destroyed the health of Hartford residents and nearby communities. Every day that the incinerator has been in operation, residents have endured higher rates of asthma and breathing problems due to air pollution from burning trash and fumes from trucks that haul municipal solid waste from at least 50 towns to the incinerator. Connecticut communities of low income and of color have suffered disproportionately from this environmental injustice.

The CT Zero Waste Coalition is committed to health and environmental justice for Hartford and our neighbors. We are a collaboration of organizations working to shut down the MIRA incinerator.

Please sign this petition and support the shut down of the trash incinerator in Hartford. Let’s work together to move Connecticut to a healthy, efficient, modern, sustainable Zero Waste economy!

Why is this important?

Burning our garbage is unhealthy, expensive, and unsustainable. So are landfills. False solutions, like pyrolysis or gasification (other ways to burn garbage), waste-to-fuel schemes (WTF), local landfills, or hauling our garbage out of state are not the answer. We support and will work hard with community leaders and residents to implement Zero Waste solutions for Connecticut.
