Stop the Full-Time Office Mandate: Support Flexible Work for Federal Employees

Subject: Request to Reconsider Full-Time Office Mandate for Federal Workers

Dear [state representative] and [OPM director],

I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to express my concern regarding the recent executive order mandating federal employees to return to full-time in-office work. As a dedicated federal employee, I believe this decision overlooks the demonstrated success and benefits of telework, and I urge you to reconsider this policy.

During the pandemic, federal agencies successfully maintained high levels of productivity and mission accomplishment while leveraging telework. Studies have shown that telework enhances work-life balance, reduces commuting costs, and improves employee retention—critical factors in maintaining an effective federal workforce. Additionally, remote work has proven to reduce operational costs and align with sustainability goals by lowering carbon footprints through reduced commuting.

A full-time return to the office may inadvertently disrupt the progress made in modernizing the federal workforce. It risks lowering employee morale, increasing turnover, and making it more difficult to attract top talent in a competitive job market.

I respectfully request that you advocate for a more flexible approach, such as hybrid work models that allow employees to balance in-person collaboration with the productivity benefits of telework. This compromise would address organizational needs while preserving the gains achieved through workplace flexibility.

Your leadership in ensuring policies reflect the evolving nature of work and the needs of federal employees would have a profound impact on the future of our workforce and the communities we serve. Thank you for your time and consideration. I would welcome the opportunity to discuss this matter further.

Why is this important?
