To: Senate Judiciary Committee, House Judiciary Committee
Stop the raids. Stop the lies.
On Thursday, June 11, the FBI under Kash Patel, raided the Cleveland office of the Ohio Organizing Collaborative, a nonprofit grassroots organization that works to expand access to the ballot for Black voters, young people, and working-class communities across Ohio.
The FBI also fanned across the state to go to the homes of staff and access electronics under the guise of investigating “voter fraud.”
This is another blatant attack on voting rights in this country from the authoritatarian-in-chief, Donald Trump.
Trump and the Republican party know they can’t win fairly, so they’ll lie and cheat their way back into office, disenfranchising millions and sowing seeds of doubt about our election system to do it.
These raids are part of a broader pattern of the Trump administration to require proof of citizenship to register to vote, require states to turn over voter data, which will then be given to the Department of Homeland Security, and limit vote-by-mail while engaging in voter purges.
Donald Trump hates democracy and he’s willing to politicize government agencies to carry out his anti-democratic agenda.
We call on the Senate and House Judiciary Committees to rein in the FBI and stop this voter intimidation.
Why is this important?
Elections in the United States are safe and secure, but Donald Trump is doing everything in his power to make Americans believe they aren’t. This sows mistrust in our election process and encourages people to stay home rather than take part in our political process and create a thriving democracy.
Trump is taking a heavy handed approach to suppress millions of votes as a way to lock-in right-wing rule for decades to come. He’s already established right-wing rule over the Supreme Court, now he wants more.
This is what happens under authoritarian regimes, not what is supposed to happen in the United States of America.
