The fight for later school start times and 6 hour days in brunswick county
Research has shown that teens ages 13-18 need 8-10 hours of sleep per night. Lack of sleep can lead to a number of things: loss of productivity, stress, anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, brain fog, frequent tardies, etc. I think that later start times would benefit students in a number of ways. Not only will later start times give students more time to properly take care of themselves before school (proper amount of sleep, eating a good breakfast, moving body, time to prepare, and hygiene) but it is likely to reduce stress, depression and anxiety. Shortening the hours will give students more energy and the capacity to take in the information. Sign the petition to help better students physical and mental wellbeing. Our goal is to push school to an hour later for all students in brunswick county.
Why is this important?
As a student, i watch myself and my peers struggle to make it through the day. Majority of us are tired, stressed, and don’t have the mental energy for every class. I also have noticed a big majority of students skip out on taking care of their bodies because they just don’t have time for it all. Both a lack of sleep and nutrients lead to depression which may explain why there’s such a big chuck of teenagers with depression and anxiety.
How it will be delivered
I plan to deliver the petition at a BCS board meeting when we reach 500 signatures
