Urgent: Major part of Miami needs representation in Tallahassee

Florida House District 113 currently has no representation heading into the 2026 legislative session.
We write as residents of Florida House District 113, which currently has no representation in the Florida House of Representatives following the appointment of former Representative Lopez to the Miami-Dade County Commission.

District 113 includes Brickell, Key Biscayne, Shenandoah, The Roads, Coral Gate, and parts of Little Havana, Coconut Grove, Edgewater, Silver Bluff, and Downtown Miami, home to nearly 180,000 Floridians who today have no elected voice in Tallahassee.

Florida law provides a clear process for filling legislative vacancies through a special election, and we respectfully urge you to act without delay. The 2026 Legislative Session begins in January, and major decisions affecting housing, insurance, education, climate resiliency, taxes, and transportation will be made before the session ends in March 2026.

Ideally, District 113 should have representation before the session concludes. But even beyond floor votes, our community needs a representative, someone accountable to constituents and available to assist residents navigating state policies and agencies. And there is always the potential for special legislative sessions or an extension to the March date.

Leaving nearly 180,000 Floridians without representation for an extended period undermines the principle of equal representation.

We respectfully ask that you promptly call a special election for Florida House District 113 so our community can choose its representative.

This request is nonpartisan and rooted in a shared democratic value: every Floridian deserves representation, regardless of party.

Why is this important?

Nearly 180,000 Miami-Dade residents currently have no representative in the Florida House. With a full legislative session approaching, our district 113 is being left out of decisions that affect our homes, schools, and livelihoods. This includes Brickell, Key Biscayne, Shenandoah, The Roads, Coral Gate, and parts of Little Havana, Coconut Grove, Edgewater, Silver Bluff, and Downtown Miami.
