In 2018 the SFMTA created the Potrero Yard Working Group, a diverse group of neighbors, stakeholders and SFMTA employees to plan for the modernization of the Potrero Yard at 17th & Mariposa in San Francisco’s Mission District. This working group worked tirelessly to deliver a new modern bus barn and 465 affordable housing units for seniors, families, the homeless and city workforce. This project received input from thousands of individuals with 1,100 surveys completed and over 3,700 subscribers to project updates.
We have an affordable housing crisis in San Francisco and housing is the key element of the Potrero Yard. This message was heard loud and clear from all the outreach completed over the past seven years, making affordable housing a priority. The SFMTA, along with massive community support, received entitlement approval from the Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors in 2025.
The SFMTA recently announced a budget deficit of $307 Million. The SFMTA decided to reduce the amount of housing that could be built in the yard to 100 units, losing 365 units.
We are asking the city and state to invest the $70 million needed to build the platform above the bus barn which will secure building 365 affordable housing units in the future that is desperately needed in San Francisco. We will never reach our Reginal Housing Needs Allocation (RHNA) goals of 82,000.00 with 46,598.00 being affordable if we do not invest, plan or strategize to build housing that has been advocated for by all our city and state representatives.
The housing element ratified by the City of San Francisco and the State of California states:
| 8.1.10 | By January 2026, the Interagency Housing Element Implementation committee (see Action 4.1.4) will assess if the city has approved the appropriate housing units by income level to meet the RHNA goals. If the City is behind the pro rata affordable housing production goals the Interagency Housing Element Implementation committee should trigger:
- Increase of additional City funding for affordable housing and pursuit of additional State funding
- Increase the land banking strategy to accommodate 50 percent more affordable housing units than the capacity of the sites acquired from 2022 through 2025 The city will implement these actions in consultation with HCD.

We must work collaboratively and swiftly to not lose the opportunity to build 365 affordable housing units in San Francisco and stop the displacement of our residents.
