Ban Gaslighting, End Shadow Power "Protect Democracy"
Congress must ban gaslighting by elected officials and stop unelected individuals from holding formal authority. Democracy depends on truth, accountability, and transparency.
We, the undersigned, call for Congress to pass legislation prohibiting gaslighting by elected officials and limiting unelected individuals from holding positions of formal authority in government.
Gaslighting, deliberate psychological manipulation intended to distort truth, mislead the public, or undermine democratic discourse, erodes trust in democracy. Current laws cover perjury and false statements under oath, but they do not address the broader manipulation that undermines public confidence.
Additionally, unelected individuals should not wield decision-making power equivalent to elected officials. Advisory roles must remain transparent, limited, and subject to oversight.
This bill would:
- Define gaslighting as misconduct incompatible with public office.
- Establish accountability measures including censure, removal, or disqualification.
- Prohibit unelected individuals from holding formal authority within government.
- Empower oversight bodies to investigate and enforce violations.
We urge Congress to act now to protect democratic integrity.
