Make body cameras a part of the ongoing collective bargaining negotiations with the Police Benevolent Association and Superior Officers Association.
Why is this important?
In light of current events it renews the need to call for police body cameras. We, the undersigned, join Nassau County Legislator Carrié Solages and Legislator Siela Bynoe in urging Nassau County Executive Laura Curran to make body cameras a priority in ongoing police union contract negotiations. Body cameras are used by law enforcement throughout this country and creates transparency by providing a factual record of what occurred in all encounters between Police Officers and civilians. We understand that Minority Leader Abrahams and Legislators Bynoe and Solages secured funding for a PILOT program for body cameras in 2014, and that this program was blocked because the former County Executive had not included the police unions in the conversations about the program.
Therefore, we respectfully request that Nassau County Executive Laura Curran and her administration make body cameras a part of the ongoing collective bargaining negotiations with the Police Benevolent Association and Superior Officers Association.
