Chicago and Illinois: Support Safe Psychedelic Analogues for Mental Health and Personal Freedom

Illinois is a leader in progressive public-health policy, harm reduction, and science-based reform. But today, our laws still do not reflect the newest research on psychedelic-assisted therapy, mental-health innovation, or safer psychedelic analogues—compounds related to classic psychedelics but often with better safety profiles, shorter duration, or improved therapeutic potential.
As Chicago and Illinois face rising rates of depression, anxiety, trauma, addiction, and suicide, we need more tools—not fewer—to support mental-health and personal wellness. Research from universities across the country shows that psychedelics used responsibly can offer profound benefits. Many psychedelic analogues are not scheduled, not associated with high harm, and demonstrate strong potential for therapeutic development, drug-policy modernization, and safer adult use.
But outdated laws—especially the 1980s Analogue Act interpretations—block progress, limit scientific research, and push use into unsafe, unregulated spaces.
Illinois can do better. Illinois can lead the way

We call on Illinois lawmakers to take action now:

1. Create a state-level regulatory pathway for legal, safe psychedelic analogues
-Allow these compounds to be evaluated and         accessed under modern safety standards, instead of relying on outdated federal interpretations.
2. Protect scientific and therapeutic research in Illinois
-Enable universities, clinicians, chemists, and mental-health organizations to evaluate psychedelic analogues without fear of legal ambiguity.
3. Establish adult-use protections for safe personal possession and responsible use
-Adults should not face criminal penalties for using compounds that show lower risk profiles, therapeutic promise, and no evidence of public danger.
4. Implement harm-reduction and product-safety standards
Regulated access ensures:
  • proper testing
  • dose consistency
  • labeling
  • consumer education
  • reduced black-market risk
5. Position Illinois as a national leader in psychedelic policy innovation
-Other states are beginning to modernize. Illinois should be at the forefront—not falling behind.

Why is this important?

Why This Matters for Chicago & Illinois
  • Chicago is experiencing a mental-health crisis that disproportionately affects young adults, marginalized communities, and individuals struggling with trauma.
  • Safer psychedelic analogues could provide new therapeutic pathways under proper regulation.
  • Criminalizing responsible adults does nothing for public health and wastes state resources.
  • Illinois has previously shown leadership with cannabis reform, criminal-justice reform, and harm reduction—psychedelic analogues are the next step.
  • Regulated access supports innovation, economic growth, medical research, and evidence-based public policy.
Illinois has the opportunity to become a national model for safe, science-guided psychedelic reform.

We urge Chicago alderpersons, Illinois state legislators, the Governor, and relevant agencies to take immediate steps toward:
decriminalizing safe psychedelic analogues,

protecting therapeutic research, and

establishing a responsible regulatory    framework for adult access.

Sign this petition to show Illinois leaders that voters support safe, modern, science-based psychedelic policy reform.
