Defend Press Freedom: Urge Paramount Not to Settle Out of Court with Trump

New York, NY 10036

Dear Mr. Cheeks,

I am writing to express my concern regarding the ongoing lawsuit filed by President Donald Trump in October 2024 over the interview conducted by 60 Minutes with CBS News’ Leslie Stahl. As a long-time viewer and supporter of 60 Minutes’ commitment to investigative journalism and the free press, I urge you and Paramount Global to resist the temptation to settle this case out of court.

The core of this matter extends beyond the individual lawsuit; it touches on a fundamental issue of journalistic independence. 60 Minutes has long been a cornerstone of honest, fearless reporting, and its strength lies in its ability to ask hard questions without fear of reprisal from powerful figures. If this lawsuit is allowed to undermine that independence, it could set a dangerous precedent for the press at large. The potential for intimidation or coercion against journalists and networks is a significant concern.

In this case, allowing a settlement out of court could be seen as an admission that public figures can control or limit the narrative by threatening legal action. The consequences of such an action would extend far beyond this particular interview and could lead to a chilling effect on investigative journalism, particularly in an era when accountability in leadership is more crucial than ever.

While legal battles of this nature are undoubtedly challenging, I believe Paramount Global, as a leader in the media industry, has a responsibility to uphold the integrity of free speech and the public's right to know. 60 Minutes and its reporters should not be deterred from pursuing tough, factual reporting, no matter the cost.

I trust that you and the leadership team at Paramount Global will make a decision that reinforces the values of transparency, honesty, and integrity that 60 Minutes has embodied for decades. I appreciate your consideration of this critical matter and your commitment to safeguarding the role of the press in our democracy.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]

Why is this important?

If we lose our First Amendment rights and freedom of the press, democracy is finished.  We need big media companies and powerful CEOs to stand up to Trump.
