End Excessive Red Hot Chili Peppers Airplay in Los Angeles

To the program directors, station managers, DJs, and corporate owners of Los Angeles radio stations:

We, the undersigned listeners of Los Angeles radio, respectfully submit this petition requesting an immediate reduction — and, if necessary, temporary suspension — of the repetitive and excessive airplay of songs by Red Hot Chili Peppers across the local FM and commercial radio landscape.

While we acknowledge the band’s longstanding cultural connection to Southern California and their contributions to rock music, the current level of saturation has exceeded all reasonable limits of public endurance. At any given hour, listeners may encounter “Californication,” “Under the Bridge,” “Scar Tissue,” “Dani California,” or “Can’t Stop” on multiple stations simultaneously, creating the unsettling impression that Los Angeles radio programming has been frozen in amber since 2006.

This petition is not motivated by hostility toward the band itself, but rather by a desire for:

  •  Greater musical variety
  •  Expanded exposure for new and local artists
  •  Reduced listener fatigue
  •  Restoration of basic surprise and spontaneity to radio programming
  •  The ability to drive across the 101 without hearing slap bass every 14 minutes
We therefore request the following:

  1.  A mandatory “cooling-off period” limiting daily spins of Red Hot Chili Peppers songs.
  2.  Diversification of playlists to include a broader range of rock, alternative, funk, punk, indie, and local Los Angeles artists.
  3.  Independent review of whether any station employee is personally responsible for queueing “Give It Away” during every afternoon commute.
  4.  Public recognition that Los Angeles contains more than one band.
We believe radio should reflect the full creativity and diversity of the city it serves — not function as a permanent tribute channel.

Signed,
Greater Los Angeles Radio Listeners

Why is this important?

People should sign this petition because no city — not even Los Angeles — should be trapped in an endless musical loop where every car ride feels like the same 11 songs chasing you from station to station.

This petition stands for diversity, fairness, and the basic human right to scan the radio dial without immediately hearing a familiar funk-rock bass line emerging from the speakers like a heat-seeking missile.

By signing, listeners support:

  •  More airtime for emerging local artists
  •  Greater variety across rock and alternative programming
  •  Relief for retail workers, rideshare drivers, and anyone trapped in traffic on the 405
  •  A future where hearing Californication once a day counts as “often”
This is also about preserving the legacy of Red Hot Chili Peppers itself. Even devoted fans can admit that overexposure turns beloved songs into involuntary psychological conditioning. A temporary reduction in airplay would allow future generations to rediscover the music naturally — instead of absorbing it through repeated exposure at gas stations and dentist offices.

Most importantly, signing sends a message:
Los Angeles is one of the most creative music cities on Earth. Its radio should sound like it.
