Justice for Marcus Taylor - Years Lost. Justice Due.
We are calling on Mississippi lawmakers to provide justice and compensation for Marcus Taylor, who served years in prison under a sentence that was later determined to exceed the maximum penalty allowed by law.
Governor Tate Reeves granted Marcus Taylor executive clemency through Executive Order 1590 after the Mississippi Court of Appeals determined that the sentence imposed exceeded what Mississippi law permitted. As a result, Mr. Taylor lost years of his life, time with his family, employment opportunities, and the ability to fully participate in his community.
This case highlights a serious failure within the justice system. When an individual serves time beyond what the law allows, there must be a meaningful remedy. No person should be deprived of their freedom due to an unlawful sentence without accountability and compensation for the harm suffered.
We respectfully ask Mississippi lawmakers to:
• Provide fair compensation to Marcus Taylor for the years he served under an unlawful sentence.
• Enact legislation establishing a clear compensation process for individuals who are wrongfully incarcerated or who serve time beyond a lawful sentence.
• Strengthen safeguards within the criminal justice system to prevent similar injustices from occurring in the future.
• Increase oversight and accountability to ensure sentencing errors are identified and corrected promptly.
Justice requires more than release from incarceration. It requires acknowledging the harm done and taking meaningful steps to make it right. Marcus Taylor’s case presents an opportunity for Mississippi to demonstrate its commitment to fairness, accountability, and equal justice under the law.
We urge our elected officials to take action and ensure that no other Mississippian endures the same injustice.
Sign this petition to support justice, compensation, and criminal justice reform for Marcus Taylor.

Why is this important?
This petition is important because no one should lose years of their life due to an unlawful sentence. Marcus Taylor spent years incarcerated under a sentence that was later determined to exceed what the law allowed. While his release was an important step, it does not restore the years he lost with his family, the career opportunities he missed, the financial hardship he endured, or the emotional toll of prolonged incarceration.
This issue extends beyond Marcus Taylor. His case exposes a gap in Mississippi’s justice system that could affect others in the future. When sentencing errors occur, there must be accountability, a process to compensate those harmed, and safeguards to prevent similar injustices from happening again.
By supporting this petition, you are standing for fairness, due process, and equal justice under the law. The goal is not only to seek justice for Marcus Taylor but also to encourage reforms that protect all Mississippians from being subjected to unlawful incarceration in the future.
No one can get back lost years, but Mississippi can acknowledge the harm, provide compensation, and take steps to ensure it never happens again.
