Keep The River in Riverside Indianapolis

Rebuild the Emrichsville Dam where it has been for 119 years to do what it was designed to do; create a usable river for recreation as part of the attraction and usefulness of Riverside Park in Indianapolis. Doing so also fixes the dilemma they are in of needing the river dammed for their new water intake. We need a win win.

Why is this important?

The Emrichsville dam was built in 1899 to create a pool in the river for Riverside Park. For 119 years it did its job. In October of 2018 the dam failed, which lowered the water level of the river upstream of the dam by nearly 6 feet, virtually ruining the namesake of the Riverside neighborhood. Now the water company, Citizens Energy Group, and the City of Indianapolis want to rebuild the dam a mile north to save money, literally taking away half of our usable river. Doing so will ruin our beautiful and extremely valuable and historic park as we try to reinvent our park and nearby neighborhoods. Besides our residents, this river is the crown jewel in Riverside.

It's important to note that this is a very time sensitive issue since we've only just learned about this issue in December and the permitting must begin this spring.

Our battle cry is the same but adjusted....

The river will be gone forever unless DPW (The City of Indianapolis, State of Indiana, USA and private donors) can come up with $16 million to add to Citizen's $6 million to rebuild the Emrichsville Dam.

Here is the problem. If we don't get the Emrichsville rebuilt now in a deal with Citizens and other contributor, private and/or public, I seriously doubt it will ever get rebuilt. It would require removing the 'new CEG' dam since it would then become a safety hazard once submerged by a 'new' 'new' Emrichsville Dam in the future. Ugh.

I have put in a public record request to see the actual estimate Citizens claims on these proposed locations. I am not sure when that request will be fulfilled - I'm working on it.

NNW is leading the efforts to arrange new meetings with all of the parties interested in rebuilding the Emrichsville Dam. We will post info here as soon as we have it.

Here is where we stand after meeting #5,. Unless we can come up with the extra $16 million in the next month or so (or a pledge), Citizens will choose one of their proposed sites and begin the permitting process this spring - April.

Please note that public is not in favor of either of these sites Citizens has chosen.

They are not in a position to lead a campaign to help us raise those funds.
