We, the undersigned, demand that the U.S. Senate uphold the principles of democracy and oppose the passage of S.J.Res.5 and S.J.Res.6, joint resolutions seeking to overturn legislation lawfully passed by the D.C. Council and, additionally, establish a policy of congressional noninterference with the legitimate self-governance of the District of Columbia.
Why is this important?
D.C., our nation's capital, has no voting member of Congress, and the local laws and taxes are subject to congressional control. This violates every principle of our democracy. Our right to make our own laws without interference from Congress must be established.
