Legalize Backyard Chickens in Town of Salina, NY

Photo by Ben Moreland on Unsplash
The Town of Salina, NY, has imposed an ordinance banning the ownership of backyard chickens. Ownership of chickens should not be banned but rather negligent ownership, of any animal for that matter. With an appropriate sized backyard and area for development chickens would be both emotionally and environmentally beneficial to the town as well as numerous residents. Please permit ownership of up to eight hens, without roosters, to reduce noise and reproduction in an appropriately sized yard and a distance of at least 100 feet from other residential dwellings.

Why is this important?

When raised well, as with any animal, chickens are friendly and provide an opportunity for enhanced learning as well as development of responsibility for young children and families. Chickens help to reduce waste and prevent insect infestations. The environmental and economic benefits of chicken ownership far outweigh any negative aspect.
