Make LBT Bus Passes more accessible to CSULB students!

CSULB started participating in the LA Metro Universal College Student Transit (U-Pass) Program in 2008, providing current CSULB students free bus passes (LA Metro, Long Beach Current 2021). In 2020, the university dropped out of the program rising costs (Long Beach Current 2024). Since then, CSULB students’ options for sustainable, affordable, and reliable transportation have been limited, resulting in backlash from students who rely on public transportation to attend school. In response to the university increasing bus pass costs from a one-time $5 fee to $40 a semester (an 800 percent fee increase) in 2019, a student started a petition, frustrated that the cost increase does not reflect the university’s alleged commitments to sustainability (Long Beach Current 2019).

As of Fall 2025, a 150-day Go Beach! Bus Pass costs $100 USD (CSULB Parking and Transportation Services). This is a 150 percent fee increase compared to 2019. While this price may seem appropriate for some students, we know there are also students unable to pay this price. The Students for Transportation Access Network (STAN) affirms that reliable and accessible transportation is a basic need, and educational institutions should provide a safety net for students who fall through the cracks of inaccessible pricing options.

STAN has two core demands:
1. Offer at least 200, 150-Day Go Beach! Discounted Bus Passes to CSULB students who meet specific criteria every semester. This program would serve as a safety net to students who rely solely on Long Beach Transit (LBT) to get to and from CSULB.
2. Implement a feature in the BeachGO mobile app that allows users to redeem in-app points accrued from sustainable transportation to purchase a 150-Day Go Beach, discounted Bus Pass.

Our two demands will (1) heavily encourage sustainable transportation, (2) increase the accessibility of sustainable and reliable transportation to low-income students, and (3) increase students’, staff's, and faculty’s demand for sustainable transportation, allowing the university as a whole to meet its sustainability objectives.

Why is this important?

In this economy, affordable, reliable, and sustainable transportation is hard to come by. Students with limited resources fall through the cracks and end up paying inaccessible fees for this basic human right.

Between 2019 and 2025, students who ride the Long Beach Transit (LBT) buses to and from campus have experienced a 1900 percent increase in semester bus pass fees. The Students for Transportation Access Network (STAN) affirms that reliable and accessible transportation is a basic need, and educational institutions should provide a safety net for students who fall through the cracks of inaccessible pricing options. Stand with us to make transportation accessible, affordable, and sustainable at CSULB!
