Not Another War! Not In Ethiopia!

We are elevating an urgent concern as a constituent of your state. The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), in northern Ethiopia, has committed atrocities that continue until this day in the regions of Amhara and Afar. These heinous acts have increased within the last year since the TPLF attacked the Northern Command of the Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF), on November 4, 2020. This war started with an unprovoked attack on the Northern Command and the killing of the federal soldiers of Ethiopia by the TPLF. The TPLF’s attack was ethnically based and targeted their fellow soldiers, who did not belong to the TPLF’s ethnic group. After the TPLF’s aggression, the Government of Ethiopia responded to the attack with a military operation against the TPLF.

In June 2021, in response to the international communities’ request for a cease-fire, the Ethiopian Government declared a cease-fire; unfortunately, the TPLF refused and continued its offensive on the people of Ethiopia. The international media has portrayed the TPLF as the victim and Ethiopia as the aggressor despite the evidence. The TPLF expanded its war on the people of Ethiopia into the Amhara and Afar regions. TPLF has killed many civilian farmers, women, and children looted hospitals and schools, and desecrated churches. When the Ethiopian Government sent nearly 1,000 trucks filled with humanitarian aid and supplies to Tigray, the TPLF held back the aid from the people of Tigray and used the UN humanitarian aid trucks to invade the neighboring regions of Afar and Amhara where they killed up to tens of thousands. With the shortage of trucks to transport much-needed aid, now the Afar and Amhara regions are in a humanitarian crisis.

Why is this important?

A false narrative of the Tigray genocide is being used as a pretext for US intervention which runs the risk of destabilizing the Horn of Africa. A testimony to this is the #NoMore movement which held rallies in 29 cities in the US and 40 cities across the globe. The #NoMore movement was created to refute the false narratives that are being spread by the media (CNN, BBC, Aljazeera, etc.), TPLF lobbyists, and sympathizers. There is no premeditated genocidal campaign against the people of Tigray. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission on the war in Tigray did not find evidence to confirm genocide or deliberate withholding of aid from civilians. As the US economy recovers from the effects of COVID, we need our government to appropriate funds responsibly. Why are we spending taxpayers’ dollars on a genocide investigation that was already completed by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights?

For current information: https://www.getfactet.org/

H.R. 4350-National Defense Authorization Act for FY 2022, which includes Amendment #555 introduced by Rep. Tom Malinowski (N.J.-7th District) charges members of the Atrocity Early Warning Task Force and the Secretary of State to promptly determine (within 60 days of being enacted into law) if there was genocide in Tigray. TPLF supporters are lobbying for a genocide designation in Tigray with the hidden motive of pushing for US intervention in Ethiopia in the hopes of the TPLF being put in power (replacing the democratically elected government). I respectfully ask that you remove sec. 6464 of Amendment #555 from H.R. 4350.
